I am right now assuming that it is the starter. here are the symptoms.
Yesterday when I would start it it sounded like the battery was going, I looked at the gages and saw it was getting good power and charging. This morning I turned the key to start and only got clicking. Tried to jump it and got nothing new. Looked at all the lights and they were shining bright and all ACC. worked fine. I was reading the Haynes manual and it said to check the relay. My guess was to pull the starter and take it to Auto Zone and have tested. Any suggestions???
I had the same problem with my '95 f-150. Crawl under the pickup and check for any loose wires. I've been driving on gravel for years, and the wiring going into the relay had wiggled itself right out of it's end. I pushed the wire back in, drove it to my garage and fixed the little bugger. Probably not the problem, but could be.
sounds like a starter to me, that clicking you hear is the soloniod/ relay opening the circut to the sarter. It you truxk has an external rela it will be mounted on the in side of the hoos on the passenger side wall it wil ahve a 6 gage wire coming from the battery, if you have 12 volt test light, all tremanals 3or 4 depending on which one. on the relay should be hot/light up the test light when the the key is in the"start positon" so you will need some one to hold it ther while you test. you can test your bat with a multi meter you should read 13.4 volts, ish
Mine had the same problem and it was not the starter relay or battery. There is a solenoid on the starter itself. Ford used a cheap push-on connector and that connector corrodes. If you are getting a clicking sound, the relay next to the battery is probably ok. Climb underneath and check the connection at the starter.
My problem was the same with the push on connector. What's wrong with getting wet? I had to fix mine in 30 below and snow coming down. Nothing like working on ford while getting in touch with nature.

Drove my wifes car to work today and if I truly needed the truck before Monday or it does not stop raining I will "get in touch with nature"

*Edit* I would rather work in snow than rain
Same thing happened to mine, exactly. It was the starter. Incidentally, Check to make sure your alternator is working according to specs. After changing the starter, start engine, disconnect battery while running, (if it dies or starts to stumble your alternator is bad) check ouput on alternator.. should have 13 volts in circuit. Less than that will cause all your other components to work harder to compensate and that's usually what causes them to go "_its-up" if you know what I mean. Make absolutely sure you spend the extra money for any electrical components with the lifetime warranty, it pays for itself the first time you have to use it down the road. Autozone will usually check it for free right in the parking lot, some other places will too.

dont forget to check battery terminal ends as they might look good but over time
they corrode on inside of termina and wont let enough current through.learned this
lesson after changing relay and other parts.
I'd be careful of disconnecting the battery while running. You can usually get away with it, but it can cause a voltage spike and damage the computer. If you decide to go that route, don't reconnect it while running - even greater risk of damage. When I do a starter I usually replace the cables and solenoid if they are even the slightest bit questionable.
