Hello all!!
Can anyone please tell me the exact location of the Transmission vehicle speed sensor, on a 91 Explorer Auto?
The Haynes manual has the location, but all That I can seem to find is 1 wire and a small plug that looks nothing like what its supposed to be.I know it has to be there somewhere.
Thank you in advance
I would expect it to be like a Ranger. Therefore, you should find it on top of the rear end. One small bolt is all it takes to remove it (and remove the wire).
On this vehicle it should provide vehicle speed data to the computer, ABS, cruise, and OD tranny. All of these items can be impacted by failure of the speed sensor.
A 91 probbly has a seprate speed sensor and ABS sensor. The Vss (vehicle speed sensor) should be in the transmission or transfercase (depending on 2 or 4 wheeldrive) rear out put shaft and the ABS sensor should be located in the top of the rearend. I think it was 93 when Ford started to combine the two into one sensor in the rear end. I could be wrong about the year though.

On my l989 Ranger 2.9 4x4 automatic, my speed sensor is located on the drivers side of the transfer case. It has what appears to be the speedo cable and a electrical. I also have a separate abs sensor on the rear axle.
Is it possible for these (vss) to go bad and still have the speedometer function properly. My overdrive doesn't always work, when it does it feels like a switch going on and off.
What is the easiet way to replace one. Do you disconnect athe cable and electric first, or unbolt the unit from the transfer case and then undo the connection?/
It dosent matter how you take it apart the cable unpluges from the sensor and the sensor pulls stright out of the transfercase in any order you want. And yes these sensors go bad and yes it sounds like yours might be.

Guess what--my problem with overdrive has been solved. It cost me $20 for the sensor. I had two transmission shops tell me that it would cost about $l200 to solve this problem. So much for our "friendly" transmission shops. These guys wonder why they have such a bad reputation for ripping people off--I wonder why???
