4r100, how to make it shift.

I installed the Factory Tech shift kit on Monday, after 3 days of driving it, I can't say enough about how much I like it. My 2001 is at 32,000 and due for a tranny oil change so I did the kit at the same time. I didn't like the way that when shifting under a heavy throttle the tranny took what seemed like 2 full seconds to complete a shift the whole time slipping. Now it takes about 1/10 of a second to go from 1-2 or 2-3 under load. Not a bang or jerk just from 1 gear to the next and I mean right now. I believe, as Greg at Madenterprises says, this will greatly increase the life of the tranny.

I don't work for them, I am just one damn satisfied customer!!

Ed

OK....Who makes the "Factory Tech shift kit", what comes with it, where did you get it. I want to do something to mine to improve the lag between gears.

airtracdriver, It consits of a new valve body/actuator. they don't have a core chare for the factory one, they just go off of the honor system. They send you a modified one and as soon as you can you send yours back. It comes with complete instructions.
Drain the pan, remove the pan, remove the filter acc. remove the valve body, replace the valve body, replace the filter, replace the pan. change your oil. that simple.

Little conspiratorial, eh?

There have been reports of posts getting lost in the "shuffle" since the new software came online.

If it continues, post in the Feedback forum about it.

Give it a break guys.... it was probably operator error (such as hitting preview instead of post), a bad router (there are litterally hundreds of thousands of routers on the Internet, with at least a dozen between any user and every server, any one of which can drop packets), or any number of other things. So please put away the paranoid dot com comspirary dot com theories dot com.

4r100, how to make it shift.

I,am not aware of that particular shift kit, but I just finished installing a Sonnax valve, and Triacumulator spings in the valve body, and all I can say is Wow!!. What a difference in how the tranny shifts now. The springs and valve are easy to install, and only took me about an hour. I would highly recomend this mod to any person that drives a SUPERDUTY !! peroid.

Bigfinn.

I have been doing research on this topic of late. I found a guys website that has some very good info on it. http://www.timskelton.com/lightning/...ranny_mods.htm
The valve body mentioned previously was probably one by Greg Evans the '4R100 Guru'. Go down to the shift kit section and read the linked articles by Greg... very informative.

From what I have gathered the trannies have been detuned to be soft and comfy and just raising the line pressure through a new line pressure boost valve in the valve body is not enough to fix a number of deficiencies. Greg addresses a lot of these problems by selling a new valve body assembly. From what I have heard they are sweet.

Then there are others who sell shift kits which have some springs in them and others have springs and valves for the valve body and then others that have springs and a new boost valve for the oil pump in the trans. Most of these focus on raising the line pressure and installing new springs to help deal with it. And I'm not talking about just triacumulator springs. Kits in this category are made from B&M, Transgo and Superior. Some shops are starting to like Superior more and more while Transgo has the bigger name from what I can tell.

Transgo seems to be in a class by itself in the area of 'Reprogramming' the transmission. The newest of these kits that relates to us is the new 4R100-HD2 Tugger kit which I have heard referred to as the new BadBoy. How do they 'Reprogram'? I probably cant explain it right but they do put new springs in the valve body and a boost valve in the pump but they elarge the holes in the plate that the valve body bolts up with that mechanically reprograms the fluid flow and pressures. The tech guys at Transgo said NOT to put in a different accumulator valve as the pressures are dealt with in the rest of the system.(but they do put new springs in)

Some people have told me that you need to pull the tranny to put the tugger kit on but the Tech at Transgo said that wan't necessary. I looked at another Trango kit and it had parts that if the trans was still in the vehicle to 'skip' putting that part in. Some of these parts were a large rubber o-ring (I think for the pump) and some large clip rings ( that I think go on the OD). These are parts that this kit is addressing the deficiencies in the 4R100 with. The seal and rings won't make it shift better but for instance the OD rings are notorious for popping out and toasting the trans.

So what did I take from all this stuff? IMHO,and programmers are a band aid, the Sonnax valve and triacummulator springs go part-way (and are sold because people want to buy an easy fix) but if you don't have much money or time I think this is a good way to go. In my mind, the best thing to do is to do a 'reprograming Kit' to get the trans working the way that it should. These kits are also adjustable, by hole size on how firm you want your shift. They also allow you to go downhill in a lower gear without burning up the trans and they have other features too. Mostly, they cool down and extend the life of the tranny. Need I say more. The tugger is The Tow Kit. Mine is on the way.

Sorry for such a long post. Hope this helps someone.

That is just what I was going to say.?!
Greg is very convincing on why his unit is the way to go. I bought it and after an install I have no regrets.
Around town or at light throttle shifts it is hard to tell the difference from the stock.
1/4 throttle there is a definate change in how quick it shifts from 1-2nd.
Hold it to the floor in D from a dead stop and when the Factory Tech shifts from 1-2 you will want to keep an eye on the speedo because your about to get clocked well above the speed limit, and whip lash at the same time.
I only wonder if the unit causes shorter life span of the rear driveline U joints? does anyone have an opinion on this?

Signed, Grinnen from ear to ear.
