My 50 merc M47 only has one wiper blade from factory, also any 48/50 Ford F1,s I,ve seen also only had one wiper, were 2 wipers an option in these years? Or did they only come with one?
YUou have to remember back when these trucks were new, money was tight and they were a truck, You didn't splurge on options on trucks, just worked them until they wore out and worked them some more!. All the trucks I've parted only had the single wiper on the drivers side. It's a easy thing to add if you can find the arm and pivot.
My panel has one wiper and there is a dual set up in the back so I guess I get to choose. I'm opting for the dual wipers. nothing like seeing what's coming at you in the rain.
Thanks Guys for the replys, having found that out ,have any of you installed dual elctric wipers, on the 48/50's? if so what set up did you use?
Alan
Alan,
Haven't got to it yet, but I have plans to use a 51-52 wiper linkage on my 48 and possibly a Jeep Cherokee motor. There was a previous thread on using the Jeep wiper motor but I don't remember who did it (have severe case of CRS). Apparently, it was not a complex modification (or else I wouldn't be considering it) and I think it may have been used on a 53-56.
Alan, my story is long and convoluted - as usual.....
When I got my 48 it had holes for both wipers but only one was present. I found the linkage under the dash connected only to the pass side pivot. Installed a new 12V electric unit, found the linkage bushings and clips and.........first rain storm they worked!........for a while......then the sweep got shorter and shorter and quit altogether. (pivot collar set-screw loosened on the motor shaft) Pulled it out and tried again - and same thing happened all over again. (Any idea how big a pain it is to get that out from under the dash? Think removing the gauge cluster to access the mounting bolts...) It is now awaiting re-installation, but has collar has been JBWelded to the shaft this time - HE HE HE
Since this is a daily driver I went back to the vac wiper - not wipers - cause the vac motor doesn't have the umph to move both. I've put up with it now for a year - maybe this summer I'll take the dash apart and re-install the electric.
Hope your's goes better. Actually one is all you need for driving - it sweeps an area large enough to be effective.
Vern, thanks for the reply I actually have a 51 cab that has the 2 wipers/linkage/ etc. and was considering using the linkage hooked to an electric motor. Have to fab a mount, but hey, that's what it's all about (I keep telling myself that)
Tim, Yeah I've considered just running one wiper, as up here in Saskatchewan I think w'ere in the Desert anyhow, Not to often do we get caught in a rain! And yes, I know how hard it would be to get at your single vac motor tucked way up under the dash!! My truck is far from stock as I'm over on the Dark side , I,m just about to put the cab back on , And I will let you know how the wiper setup goes, that will be done befor I do too much finishing!
I have the vacuum system in my '49, I bought an electrical setup from a '52. That worked fine until I tried to install a stock radio, the wiper motor took up the same space as the radio. I modified the wiper to mount the motor in the place original vacuum motor was mounted. I want to redo it because it just doen't work quite right. I have another electric wiper that I am going to use in my '48 panel. Both trucks are as close to stock as possible and have the 6V system.
