Tranny Problem 2

First Thanks to everyone that responded....need a little advice....anyone had dealings wot AAMCO? I think I will drop my Bronco off tonite to get checked tomorrow? Do I need to be aware of anything? Also just an update....when the check engine light comes on the tranny shifts hard to 2nd and not at all into OD...but it comes on and off during driving and when its out the tranny seems to shift fine but still a little sluggish.......either way it seemds not to shift into OD at anytime? Running @ highway speeds of 55-60mph the rpm's are between 2500-2900. Anyother helpful tips???Thanks again!!!

I had a similar problem. Turned out to be the Throttle Positioning Sensor.

never heard anything bad about aamco but don't go to cottman! Had a tranny rebuilt through them and about 2 weeks after the warranty it went out! They did nothing but said they would fix it again for 1200. Needless to say I went somewhere else.

Sounds like it could be your MLPS or your TPS. Have you pulled to codes to see exactly what that check engine light is trying to tell you?

If your tranny has fault codes or problem overdrive indicator should flash, or stay lit. If it goes into safe mode pressure goes way up causing hard shifts.
Check May 2004 Four Wheeler magazine article on E4OD overhaul and upgrades, Just got mine overhauled, they cover all the upgrades so you will know what to have done for a better tranny setup.

tranny probs

I had a sensor that had to be replaced at 60K. It caused the hard 1-2 shift, and no power in 3rd. Simple fix and it did trigger the MIL and the OD LED. Replaceable from the outside. I had the dealer do it, as I know nothing about autos.

I had to look it up, thought I had the bill still, but all I wrote down was "speed sensor." Sorry. :-(

speed sensor

It was definitely a sensor on the tranny. Wish I still had that bill to grab the PN and name. But they said it was accessible from the outside.

Stay away from National Chains....

if you can. Unless I have a referral from someone I trust I don't step foot in the national chains. You would do much better to run into a Napa Autoparts and ask around about independent guys. They are usually much more honest and more qualified. They depend on word of month and repeat customers. The big chains know that no matter who they pi$$ off or screw over there will always be the next customer.

Maybe some of you have had better luck, but I know I wouldn't trade my independent mechanic for any of the experiences I have had at big chain stores.

Good luck with the tranny. I would bet it's your MLPS sensor. They have a tendency to go bad and make things appear much worse than they are.

Went to the local AAMCO about 5-6 years ago with my van...shifting issues. They said it needed rebuilt or replaced. Had about 100K miles on it so made sence...or could make sense. But took it Kennedy Transmission for a second opinion.

A few months before, I'd had another shop do a tranmission "tune-up" before a trip (new filter, new fluid). Apparently they'd tightened the bolts too much and caused a leak. So the problem was simply too low a fluid. They tighted the bolts correctly, charged me $50, and on my way.

A few years later, had a read end noise. AAMCO said, need to tear the rear end apart. Kennedy said, don't worry...that was 40K something miles ago.

Twice Kennedy could have gotten several thousand from me, but twice they were honest....won't waste my time for a third AAMCO opinion next time, will go directly to Kennedy.

Well, AAMCO want close to $2000 with only a 2yr warranty because it was Fords larger trans the E4OD. That made wonder then.....so I took her home and replace the fluid and filter. Cleaned the pan and paint the outside chrome color. I found a few shreds of metal stuck to the magnet but nothing big. Anyway after I finished I took her for a test drive and everything seemed fine. Well, the next day she was back to normal and even stalled on me once. But, now for the past 2 days no problems, no check engine light, nothing......I mean it still shifts mushy betweem 2 & 3 at times and seems to rev a bit before going into OD. But it runs better than before. So I think I may hold off a bit longer to get my cash straight for a new one. Has anyone seen the trannys on ebay for $950? They are E4OD's. Just wondering....any idea let me know....sorry for the long post! And thx everyone!!! Updates to come!

Many times it is better to have your old tranny rebuilt rather than just buy a new one. The problem is that there are many different kinds or variations of E4OD depending on vehicle, year and engine set up. A good rebuild with all the upgrades and a warranty is just as good as a new tranny but no shipping, no core charge and no compatibility issues. If your ebay tranny breaks, who will warranty the repair??? I went throught the same concern myself and this is just the route I decided to take.
