Welcome to FTE!

The Temperature Sending Unit is what you want to check/replace. It's what supplies the signal to the temperature gauge on the dash.

First, welcome to FTE!!!

The "coolant temperature sensor" is the same thing as the "temperature sending unit". Be careful, though, there
is also a ECT sensor next to the temperature gauge sending unit. The ECT sensor is for the PCM, and it has a
2 wire connector on it. The sensor for your temperature gauge just has a single wire connector on it.....

To test your gauge, disconnect the single wire connector,
and short it to ground. If your gauge is ok, it will go full scale to "HOT". If it doesn't, then your gauge is broke. The ECT sensor HAS NOTHING to do with your temperature gauge.

Simple test, remove the single wire from the temp gauge sending unit, shove a nail etc in it and ground it to the engine right beside the sensor. Have someone turn the key to run-not start- & the temp gauge should go to full hot.

I honestly think this type of part will be a dealer only item with the junkyard being the alternative. If your local junkyard tries to sell you the entire cluster and not the gauge itself, try car-part.com for more sources.

Hi guys,

I've had trouble with my gauge as well and tried 87 XLT's suggestion. The Gauge went to full hot.

Faced with changing the sender, I was wondering if mechanical gauges are better/more reliable than electric ones?

I am also having the same problem, my sending unit actually has 2 wires i believe, because the new one i bought looked the exact same as the old one. But now every once in a while after running for apx. 40 mins, i'll see it jump to where it should be, and shortly after, drop again.

You wont gain anything with an aftermarket temp gauge, i'd just replace the sending unit for 6 bucks.

The 2 wire sensor is the ECT, for the computer, the sensor for the gauge only has 1 wire.

Tony, before condeming the guage, try running a wire from the backside of the gauge to ground. See if you can make it peg from there. You could also have a wire problem in between....Grounding it at the sender checks the gauge AND the wiring to it.
