Hello to All....I purchased a 1993 EB 5.8 for $3000 about two weeks ago......she is in great condition..but...every once in a while I get a really hard shift from 1st to 2nd gear (auto)....it also seems to be a little sluggish shifting through the gears.....but if I shift on the column everything is fine? Oh and the hard shifting from 1 to 2 stops or gets better after running for a while? Do I need a new tranny or do I just need a flush and filter? Forgot to mention she has 158,000 miles.......Thanks in advance!!!
It's probably a combination of both. 158K miles is alot of miles for a non rebuilt E4OD. I would have a service done though. Be sure that you get the flush and not just a drop. If that does not work then it may be time for a rebuild. But before you do all that just check the fluid level. Could just be a bit low.
I am not saying rebuild. Not yet anyway. I am talking about flushing out your tranny fluid. Some people/shops will just unbolt the pan (DROP), drain the fluid in the pan, and top off the fluid. Then there is a machine (FLUSH) that hooks up to the lines and flushes out the entire system and replaces it with new ATF. That is what you want. They should drop the pan anyway to replace the filter.
I think what was meant by drop was just dropping the pan to change the fluid. The best way, like what was mentioned, is to do a full flush of tranny to chang the fluid.
If the oil change doesn't help, and your tranny is going south(bad), then check out High Impact at http://www.high-impact.net/
Mine shifts kinda hard, too, from 1st to 2nd. the other shifts seem to be fine though.
Fluid change made mine worse. At 126,000 miles after fluid change and service, torque converter and forward clutch started to shudder at freeway cruise.
Mine did all that other stuff you mentioned before service, but still worked.
Tranny shop guy who did the overhaul said at that mileage don't do anything if it still works. They will get you money sooner or later.

I had a similar problem. Hard shifts into 2nd. Transmission had 165,000 miles on it at the time. It was sporadic.
Turns out I had a shift module inside the transmission that was grounding out. I had a transmission due this repair. It cost about $400. Transmission has worked great ever since.
Incidentally I have 205,000 miles on the transmission and it still works great. No need to replace.
If you do get a tranny flush you are going to want to make shure that the torque converter has the fluid changed.
But, if you do a fluid change it could lead to further problems because when the fluid is changed it could cause a peice of material that has built up in the transmission to break loose, which could get cought into a gear and totaly kill the transmission
