This idea has been creeping up on me for some time now and I think that I'm about ready to give it a shot.I can get a good deal on a header, converter, and Flowmaster muffler for my 2.3L Ranger,so I think that I'm going to buy it and have it installed.
The only thing that I'm worried about is my 02 Sensor. It's in the collector of the manifold at the moment, but if I get that header,it will have to either be mounted in the collector of it,or I'll have to buy a converter with an O2 boss. So,if I have to do that,I'll have to make the wiring on the sensor longer so it will reach. Can the wiring on the O2 sensor be lenghtened successfully?I talked with my buddy at Auto Zone and he said that a new one was $42,so if I mess it up,I'm not out that much.I think that it's worth a shot myself.
I believe that it will be generally "easy" to install a header once I get some of the stuff out of my way.The air intake pipe, some of the A/C hoses, etc. My A/C leaked out all of it's freon,so I have no dangers there.I'm going to have it fixed and recharged once this header and stuff is on.My current "factory" exhaust system is 2.00" in diameter.I believe that I'm going to go up to 2.25".I wanted to build a 2.5L Stroker for this truck, but I guess I'll wait since my engine runs perfectly and doesn't use any oil. But,if I ever build one and install it,it will hook right up to that header and exhaust system since it's nothing but a 2.3L block and head anyway.
So,anyone that has extended the wiring on their 02 sensor, let me know what all was involved. It will be this summer before this project is tackled, but I can get started on buying the components at this time.Personally,my opinion on the sensor is this, wiring is wiring. There's no reason in my mind that it couldn't be lenghtened.Know what I mean?
Thanks for any insight.I'll let you know how it goes and I'll also type up a tech article on the installation of the header with some pics .

Thanks for the reply.I forgot that I have an extra O2 sensor off of a 1991 Mustang,so I'll probably tamper with it first.I got to looking tonight and I wonder if I can install this header without lifting the engine??It looks like it's going to be a tight fit. Also, would it hurt anything to drive the truck from my home to the muffler shop with the straight header on it?It's a long tube header. The only thing that I can think would be a problem is the noise. All I'm asking is if it would cause any engine problems.
Right on.I've thought about that. But,since the drive is basically 55 mph and the fumes exit on the right side,I'm not really worried about it.I believe that I can get by,even if I have to stick my head out the window .How loud are these little dudes with uncapped headers?
Can't say how loud it will be but I'm sure everyone will hear you coming. Even with the exhaust on the right you will still get a lot of fumes in the cab. I just sold a F250 460 V-8 with an exhaust leak between the manifold and pipe, bad fumes in the cab.
