Not necessarily. Back in the 60s, Ford painted engines different colors depending on the size and application. I believe I've seen straight sixes painted red or orange in those years.

Good call. I am looking at my Ford truck ad collection. In a January 1965 Popular Mechanics ad for the new Ford Trucks they show the new big sixes (240 and 300) in red and orange, but it is not clear which color is the 240. Actually those colors are on the oil pan, block, head, tappet cover, and intake manifold. It shows the exhaust manifold as a Ford bluish on both engines and the valve covers appear to be blue also. Starter, fan, air cleaner, oil fill cap/breather all appear black. Altenator and carb look silver. Not sure if the actual engines were quite that colorful or this was just doctored up for the ad.
My '77 had a blue 300 I6; my '84 and '95 had silver/grey I6s.

ok, so what kind of paint can be used on an exhaust manifold? i suspect your average krylon won't hold up for too long. maybe something with krypton in it?
Eastwood sells manifold paint in aluminum & cast gray good to 1800 deg. F. I have used the aluminum and it works well. You have to really clean all the surfaces well to get a good long lasting job.
As far as I know, the 65-66 engines were that reddish-orange color. It's a shade kind of peculiar to ford...In the 67, they changed to a semi-dark blue color. If you buy the paint at the auto parts, it's called "old ford blue". They also made a light blue ford color. Might be called "new ford blue" This is incorrect for most older blue 300's. The light blue ford color is very close to the light mopar blue. It's waaayyy lighter than the normal blue used on older engines. I think they changed the engine color in 67, partly cuz it was a brand new series of ford truck. IE: 67-72, and 73-79, etc...MK
BTW, if you want rattle can paint to paint a blue ford engine, "duplicolor engine enamel "ceramic"" with a bar code # of "DE1621 OLD FORD BLUE" is the correct color.
Of course, I'm fairly sure your 65-66 is red...Don't know the correct # for it...I bet they make it though...MK
