will they even work with the transfercases? I have a 1990 150 4x4 and the tranny is going I think sometimes doesn't want to shift into final drive you got to really wind it up. but i would not go with a "AOD" again either "e4od" or a c-6 ,, would I have to change the cpu for the e4od ?

Lagerlot,
I just got rid of the same problem with my AOD.First, check out the adjustment on the trans control cable.Might help!Next,I pulled the pan & found the snap ring holding the Overdrive servo cover had slipped out of its groove and let the cover back out of position. You have to pull the valvebody to check it.It's the front servo on the passenger side.
I got a manual from 'Makco transmissions, inc." online for $16.00 that was helpful.
At the price of transmissions now-a-days,you might want to try this.

logerlot,
i have an 88' 4x4 302 with an aod, i rebuilt it with a friends help for under $200, it would have been less but we had to do it twice b/c of a stupid mistake. i know every body says they are junk but i would cosider keeping it as long as you plan on using it as a daily driver. they really arn't that bad of a tranny as long as you take care of them. the original tranny i had made it to 185,000 miles and it still wasent bad, i just rebuilt it befor i had major problems with it, now my truck has 202,000 miles and it still shifts like a dream, and i don't exactly baby it around.

i'll check that stuff out ,, it shifts fine sometimes and others it doesn't. truck has 145k on it. I think part of my sluggish problem was the new tires, i went from 235/75/15 to 31x10.5x15 . I didn't think it would make a big diff but i can tell . I picked it up from the garage and it just didn't have the power it did before and he did nothing mechanical. the motor was rebuilt supposable 20k miles ago looks like it might be righ prety clean for 145k . A guy at work told me to put a cup od brake fluid in there that it would help the seals on the tranny. he said cause it sat for 3 months that the seals dried out. I never heard of that before and I do most of my own mechanical stuff.

Lagerlot,
HOLD the brake fluid! The seals will swell and, probably, blow out on you at that mileage. If your able to do mechanical work, then you should be able to go through the trans yourself.
For about $200.00 you can do that baby and even put in a shift kit.Another $200.00 should get you a rebuilt convertor, too!"Makco, inc" has the manual & parts. There are other good suppliers on line too.
As for that performance loss, you just effectively changed drive gear ratios when you put those 31 inchers on there! Either get more motor or change up to 4:10's, or better, if you want your performance back.Stock 302's with stock(3:55) gears just
don't pull big tires very well.

I've seen a listing in the KC Star for a shop that will rebuild 3 speed auto trannies for $189.00 with warranty - you pull and install yourself. Never called them but an AOD trannie can't be a whole lot higher priced ($250?). If you got 145K out of the orginal, you should get just as many miles out of a rebuild. Do you really think you have that truck yet at 290K?

I'd pass on the brake fluid - to easy to gum something up with those kinds of miles and wear on it.

i'll probably have it at that milage but will have since replaced the motor. Right now I will do a few little things for HP but i'm looking for a 5.0 to build. I figure headers, airbox cool tape wrap, underdrive pullys and advance the timing 2 degree's should give me about 225 hp I don't really want to go higher than 325 or 350 hp not for a daily driver and gears is deffinatly out thats too much money considering I am in the middle of building a 1978 GMC Jimmy that I'm changeing the 2.73's in that to 4.56's hehe I might get shot for saying this in here but I wish I had my 350 in my truck , 380 hp !!! Anyways I was leary about the brakefluid been tinkering too long to try something I never heard of. I paid 800 for the truck only needs a little body work and some rear springs, hehehe and some HP!!

trannie fluid is petroleum based, the seals for the trainnie are designed for petrolum based fluids, DOT3 brake fluid is mineral based, if you put brake fluid into your trannie it will cause the seals to swell, if you get lucky it will make swell just enough to seal leaks, however if they over swell which the more than like likey will it will ruin the seals and your trannie will leak and you i will have to rebuild it.
as for your power problem i dont think that 31x10.5's will significantly rob you of power i have a rebuilt 302 with a slightly larger cam and other small mods, but i have a 3.08 gear and the same size tires and i get plenty of power.
