If you get nothing else from this response, at least learn this:
Never buy parts from Ford that are available from International!! A cps through International will cost about $86, and it's the same part.
In answer to your question, there are two different cps's for the pre Super Duties. One was used on '95's and early '96's, and the other was introduced in the middle of the '96 model year, and was also used on '97's. The difference between the two is the material the electrical contacts are made of. Of the two, you should get the newer one. I don't know if the cps from a Super Duty would work. Maybe someone else will chime in.
Good luck.

$196.00 for a CPS WOW thats got to hurt! Do not pay more then $100 for one. I got mine from Ford for about $90. Like was said IH has them too for a good price.

Go to ebay dude ... ask the seller for the int'l number on the cps and take it from there or like quad said, go to international directly. Try to get the old one out and take the numbers off it, just dont tell the int'l dealer its for a ford, they bust yer chops over it.

The sticker on my door jamb says my '96 F250 was manufactured on 12/95. Can/should I use the newer Cam Position Sensor with the gold contacts, or do I need to use the older version?

Tunka, your truck most likely has the older "tin" contact CMP sensor since it is a early 96 model year. But you can use the gold plated contact sensor. The build date is not the determining factor, but rather there was a change at a specific engine s/n. Either way they are interchangeable.

I believe if you use the newer part you may have to shim it to have it work properly. That's what I've heard. Also, did the wire harness also have tin contacts in the early engines? If it did you are better off using "like" metals. I would use the correct part. If the newer part worked well in the old engines they wouldn't still make 2 parts IMO.

Not to sound like a "know it all", my CMP has worked well for 3 years in my 96, as well as in many of the fleet trucks I maintain. Some trucks will require shimming but that has more to do with the front engine cover machining. My truck did not require shimming. The newer CMP is designed with a greater tolerance for air gap so it is less likely to need shims. But if in your own mind you feel better about using the older part# on the appropriate engine by all means do so.

I asked about interchangablity because I can't find my S/N on the engine. The white label on the front of the engine is worn and unreadable. I've crawled under the truck to read the number near the rear oil cooler pad but but I'm only seeing a part number - not the 7 digit serial number. I guess I'll have to wait until I have it up on a lift.

Seeing as how my '96 was manufactured on 12/95, I guess I can assume I have the tin contacts.

You must have the older part.
