Turns out the grumbling noises my truck has been making is the ring and pinion finally dying after 220k miles. I'm thinking about changing the gearing down from 3.55 to 4.10s, but a friend suggested I look into 4.30's. Anyone got any ideas as to whether 4.30's is worthwhile or will that just burn more gas? I'm running a 302 with 33'' tires at the moment.
depends on whether or not you're mostly on or off-road. if you're on-road, 4.10 would be good. off road, i think you might be able to go as high as 4.56's. i've got 32's and i'm going with the 4.10's, most likely. my theory is to keep it driveable and add a crawl box to get my final drive ratio up really high, should i need one.
just to give you a idea, 33" tires with 4.10's should give prety close to same final ratio as the 3.55's with stock tires, so it should feel about like it was a stock setup, so if you went with a 4.33 (if you can find that ratio) or 4.56's then you would notice a lot more grunt. if you have a OD transmision then the 4.56's would be nice and you'd still beable to cruz a hwy speeds with out killing your engine. hope this helps DW
spixican07 returns from the dead! Man, its been a while since Ive seen you post. You say 33"s at the moment....is that going to change? You will be perfect with 4.10s and 33s. Check out http://www.4lo.com/calc/geartable.htm . I ran 35s with 4.10s, and thought there were good. 4.10 is the good midpoint for low end power and highway cruising.
