Angry whats wrong with my bronco?

last thursday when i was coming home from school i came around a corner and my bronco just died. still had gas, and would still crank, but wouldn't even fire,(and it had a burning smell) so after getting someone to come after me (which they didn't, my dad couldn't understand that i was on road 6, not 9 which i got in trouble for) but after sticking my ice scraper between the seat and the clutch i was able to turn it over from under the hood. no spark. so on a lucky chance i took the 10 ga wire that was to my fan, stripped off the end, jammed it into the side of the coil. and on luck it fired up and i went like a honda-bein-chased-by-a-mustang home. to which it died again coming in the drive way because it blew the fans fuse. i tore apart the dash to ispect wiring and was able to find nothing, no wires were burned. but yesterday i tried it, and it fired up like nothing ever happened! which is bad because i haven't messed with any thing yet. i think that its the ignition switch, but dont know how or even if i can test it at home. has anyone else had this problem?

You could have a flaky pickup coil; if it doesn't sense distributor rotation, then the coil doesn't get power. The pickup coil is mounted in the distributor. I think you can check it with a meter; it's been a while since I've had to mess with one. Or you could have a bad ignition switch.

One common problem that I haveseen is the EEC relay. if your bronc doesn't have it, also check the fusible links at the ignition coil. you could have one ready to go
