I have been told, "It's a bear to tune up this engine and it is well worth the money ($300) to have someone else do it. I tend to disagree, but I have never tuned a 4.6, does anyone out there have an opinion on this. I have priced the parts and they come to around $85 depending on how high a quality parts I want to get. I just can't see paying $200+ to change plugs and wires.
what is meant by "tune up" (meaning what all is included). but i agree, changing plugs and wires on 4.6 is not that bad. Passenger side firewall plug can be tough. I used motorcraft replacement wires and plugs. Cost more but worth it if you are going to keep the truck (IMO). In particular there are some crappy plug wires on the market so beware of the cheapo parts. O2 sensors dont need to be replaced as part of a tune up--run them until you have an engine code.
maf measures the volume and density of air flowing from the outside into the thottle body. it is located between the air filter and the throttle body. You can see the filaments (simliar to a light bulb). If you have security torx socketyou can disassemble and soak the maf in a small bottle cap filled with electronic cleaner or just use brake kleen (dont use carb cleaner, and make sure what you use is labelled "dries quick with no residue"). Instead of taking the air intake apart, you can also open it up slightly and give the filament a good spraying. But dont touch it with q tips or with anything for that matter. just the spray or soak. I clean my maf every 20,000 miles or so. Still running the original maf at 165,000 miles.
