I just bought a 2000 X v10 4.30 ls and am towing 10,000lbs plus. I had the exhaust checked (something sounded a little different) and the mechanic said there is a small crack in the exhaust pipe where it enters the cat. converter. He said the whole pipe and muffler must be replaced or that he could weld it but could cause problems later. He suggested Dynamax system for $630.00. What would be the best replacement system for my situation? Any thoughts on welding the crack? The mechanic said the rest of the system looks solid. I don't mind the way it sounds, any concerns about letting it stay the way it is for awhile?
Thanks
No I did not. The only reason I took it to the shop was because I thought I could hear it. He pulled it into the garage and came back to tell me. I would not do anything to it without having someone else check it out first, I just want to know my options first.
Thanks
I'd verify that the crack exists befoe I started thinking of solutions. I know...I know... kinda cynical of me but when the guy inspecting has a finacial interest in the crack being there well...
I appreciate the feed back. My own mechanic ( my employee) has confirmed a small crack right at the cat. converter. He said he could weld it but it is right up against the converter. His thought is to repair it completely with a weld he would have to weld on the converter. Any thoughts on this? If I decide to replace the system what is the best option? I am in no way shape or form mechanically inclined so does this make sense?
If the crack is at the cat - I'd ask Ford for a replacement if u haven't had the truck that long...
If not, weld it... and put a hanger to limit the vibration...
When I had my turbo back system put in they welded my cat back in....
it's worked out well... and it's not like something I disconnect every day
but if I have to... a torch will cut thru the pipe in front just like any pipe !!!
