Installing New Hooker Dual Exhaust System (problem)
I ordered from summit racing a Hooker dual exhaust system to replace my rotted single exhaust. I ordered the kit over the phone and made sure the kit was exactly made for my truck and motor: '79 F250 4x4 long bed with a 351M.
I'm not a mechanic so dropped the truck and box off at my mechanic, who said no problem, he'd have it done in a few days.
Yesterday I received a call from him saying the right side pipe and muffler had gone in problem free, but the left had a problem. He said the left side manifold head pipe was too long, and was hitting the frame cross member instead of bending over (or under, I'm not sure), as it should have. Basically said it was too long and would not work the way it was.
I called Summit and explained the issue and they were awesome. They immediately sent out a new system and said to box up the parts that didn't fit and UPS would grab them. We are wondering if the first box happened to have an incorrect pipe in it, or if the second box will have the exact same pipe, and that's just the way it is. In that case, my mechanic said he could probably do some cutting and rigging and re-welding, but that will take more time and increase the install price considerably. The attraction of this Hooker system was that it was supposed to be all pre-bent and bolt on.
Have any of you ran into this on your truck, or can offer any suggestions?
We put one of these kits on my dad's 79 Bronco way back in the late 80's, it was definitely a one size fits none kit at the time, I don't know if they have changed (it was a long time ago) but it sucked so bad, I still wouldn't look at one of those kits...
