I think the availability of V10s on the lot probably has alot do do with location. Here in MN, dealers usually have a good selection of V10s on the lot. There are definately more diesels, but no lack of V10s by any means. I probably know 10 people with 99+ Superduties and more than half own V10s. I am guessing that the cold weather we experience has an influence on that. Traditionally diesels have had more issues with using correct fuel blends, gelling, hard starts, etc. The V8s are a definately minority around here.
Yes it must be a regional thing. I also live in Northern Cal I bought my 02 SD XLT used in 2003 with a V10. I walked the dealers lot to look at the new inventory and realized that my V10 was the only one at the dealership at the time, all the rest were PSD's. I asked the salesman and he blamed the buyer for the dealer and said the guy had a thing for diesels. Probably just sales talk.

Someone had mentioned on here that they were unable to get a manual tranny in a V10 Superduty, because they were in California.
When I bought my SD They had about 35 on the lot. One desiel and no v-10's. I certainly would have got the v-10 if one was available seeing as how it get's about the same mileage as the 5.4. But the deal I got was too good to pass up. I am certainly not displeased with my 5.4, but who would not want more power with the same mileage? I also don't believe Ford is not producing the 10's for CAFE reasons. All vehicles that get the 10 are not even rated for fuel economy!
I'll second Toreador Diesel's original post, PSD's & V8's everywhere, but no V-10's. I put in a factory order for mine, but then again, I wanted a funky configuration that no dealers had on their lot (V-10, auto, 4.30Ls, factory blackwall all-terrians, no factory tint, and NO ESOF *GASP*!)

I don't see any reason for not being able to get a manual tranny in CA other than it's what the dealers want to sell or stock in their inventory. Our smog regs are usually tougher than the rest of the states but the state regs don't usually apply to anything above a 1/2 pickup.
I just looked at the pamphlet that I picked up at the dealer and it shows the 6-speed manual as a optional trans for all three motors.

Yes, the thing that today (for the first time) refused to lock one hub when going into 4x4. Then, after taking it OUT of 4x4 the other hub did not UNlock.
