i have a 88 f150 5.0, i changed the computer in the truck because i was unable to pull codes now i get the following codes:12,46,33,77 and 52. Does the computer have to be the identical model or as long as it was a 5.0? the reason i did this was to find the high idle problem, i have changed tps, cleaned iac, changed ect, checked all wiring, etc. Any help would be a Huge help!
In the 88 model year, the 302 was not mass air. If the computer you got was, that may be partof the problem. As far as the codes, go look in a hayes manual at advance auto or autozone.
Here's what my code reader book says:
12 = RPM at idle out of Range/HIGH
33 = EGR valve Fault / not closing properly / TPS fault (Diesel)
46 = Thermactor Air is NOT bypassed.
52 = Power Steering pressure switch open
77 = Operator error during dynamic response test / Wide open throttle not sensed.
Possible problems here are EGR not closing all the way, and the power steering pressure switch is bad.
Pull off the EGR and clean the pintle (beveled pin in the center) making sure it seals all around.
Replace the Power steering pressure switch(PSPS). It looks kinda like the oil pressure switch only on the high pressure line before the steering box.
Redo your testing and make sure you do the WOT test. If you don't you won't get a valid result.
Once you reset the EGR and replace the PSPS disconnect the battery to clear the computer. Run the engine for a few miles to relearn and then pull the codes again.
For 12: check idle air control solonoid, and related wiring.
For 33: EGR valve opening not detected - test EVP sensor and EGR vacuum lines and EVR solonoid, and as Larry said, check to be sure the valve is closing fully, and verify that it is not stuck closed.
For 46: check vacuum lines going to thermactor system valves for leaks. Also test TAD and TAB solonoids.
52 and 77 are probably just from where you didn't rev the engine when the computer gave the "goose code." I wouldn't worry about these last two codes until you get the others sorted out. Also, it is possible that the computer uses the time when the throttle opens to check the EGR valve opening, and may have caused that code too (don't know how likely this is, but it is a possibility).
guys thank you for your help! you guys rock! i am still getting error codes 21,31,46, ad 52 for reason that the switch was removed. "Thermactor air not bypassed during self test" what does this mean? any help would be appreciated. If you guys need help in the computer department dont hesistate to ask me.
Thermactor code means that the computer did not sense the extra oxygen that should appear when it opened the tad or tab solonoid. Could be bad vacuum lines, bad tad/tab valves/solonoids, or plugged up air passageways.
ok guys thanks again for all your help! this is what i am down to, i am getting code 33, egr valve not opening. my question is when its all the way down is that closed? should i be looking at the egr itself or the evp?
Yes, it's closed when it's all the way down. The vacuum pulls it up. Could be the EGR valve (torn diaphgragm, etc.) but I thought that you changed it. Otherwise, could be a bad EGR solenoid, or bad EGR position sensor.
