Shifting question

I have a '89 F250 XLT Lariat with a 5 spd (4 plus overdrive and reverse). It's my first manual, and I've been driving it for about 6 months and have run into a problem. How do I treat 1st gear? It seems so low that it's not even usable. Do I need to use it when I'm not hauling anything?

Any advice would be great, thanks.

If your motor has enough butt, no. 1st is to low for regular driving as a general rule unless you are creaping in traffic or pulling out with a load or on a steep hill.

The first gear is called granny gear 'cause it's so slow. Just start off in 2nd when driving around. On hills or towing, use 1st to get going. The low first gear is used so that you don't burn the clutch so bad on hills and towing getting started.

That really helps, thanks alot. I didn't know what was considered 'normal' clutch slipping and usually didn't slip much at all.
