when im brakeing it pulls bad to the right and when you relese it snaps back it put it on pavment and turned it the tie rods look good could they still be bad?
It could be a number of brake or steering related problems, You can go to forums, Misc, brakes, steering, suspension and check out the various threads related to the problem. They have helped me a whole lot.
Your front left brake is not grabbing, if drum brakes then the self adjuster may not be working on that side. Anyway, either adjust the left out, or the right side in.
My 71 did the SAME (only left) from the day it came off the truck new (6/4/71). Drum brakes can do that. Get an old or old style repair manual for your truck and completely recondition the front brakes (rears too? Mine were fine.---). Gotta have same pressure and movement on both sides of all componets. Be sure shoes are new and arc ground or cam ground to shape of drums (which must be true) -- seldom done even by 1970. Some relign brakes and let shoes bed in (wear to shape of drum), but that can get HOT. Mine was under warrenty and VERY DANGEROUS! Ford dealers were lousy, but service manager FINALLY had EVERYTHING (including backing plates and hoses), but King Pins, tires, wheels and HUB CAPS taken off a demo that was OK. Then mine was and the demo turned left every time brakes were used! I coulda fixed it (real dumb "mechanics" where I was!), but it was brand new!!! Religned brakes 10 years ago at 82K and did wheel cyls, hoses and hardware = JUST FINE! Of course the steering, etc.
was fine in 1971, 1994 and is now! I know it's really maddening and all, and you may be
"crazy," but the problem is REAL! Be deliberate and paitient. If you can find someone who's seen front drum brakes and is GOOD----- I can't fix computerized stuff, but can get the old ignitioins and carbs (including dual SU's on MGB) to run real well and most of today's techs are stumped by that. I'm 61 going on 16 and had to get this comPEWter to find HELP FOR MY BAD BACK -- Just like your brakes!!! G Luck!!!
Hey guy, I went to all the grief of joing this, so I could try and help with those brakes. When my 71 did that, I swore I'd never buy anything new again (and let the manufacturer get $$$) and I haven't! I've rescued a couple derelicts and gotta 3 that were "hardley broke in." I drive em a LONG TIME, if I like em (My dad got a 1970 Pontiac
Catalina new (also trouble). He drove it 16 1/2 years (till he was 82) and I drove it 5 more. A 91 Buick in used a good deal drove no better! My 71 Sport Custom is, by far, the best vehicle I've had much to do with -- DEAD RELIABLE and cheap to run (despite dismal gas mileage -- put in thick head gaskettes -- runs and pulls (360 - 4sp) better than ever on 87 octane unleaded. Paid me back real quick!!!
My 72 4x4 was doing the same thing. I had taken it to two different shops and found that my front left drum was hosed and that the left front wheel bearing was shot. When the truck was up on jacks the left front wheel had play and would move top to bottom, not side to side like when turning the wheel to steer. I also found that the right side had no play in the wheel at all and that the drum was ok. Well I decided to replace both drums and had the left side of my closed knuckle dana 44 worked on and all is well again. I hope this helps as well.
