Have The New F-150 Lariot With All Options (600mi. Now). But This Is Not To Include A Knocking In The Engine. The Dealer Has Said It Is "normal" But For Some Reason I Just Don't Believe Them! It Is Not There When It's Cold, but Starts Up When The Engine Has Been Driven And Up To Temp. seems To Come Off The Passenger Side Of Engine Only. Sound Like A Bottem End Knock But Can't Be Heard On The Drivers Side. Anyone Other Than Me Hear It.
Have the same motor and no knock. Doesn't matter hot or cold, it doesn't knock. Even if you open the hood. The only slight noise that can be heard with the hood open is clicking of the injectors, but this is very slight and probably not noticed by most people. If your noise is more of a clicking sound and only heard with the hood open, it may be this. If the noise is more of a knock and can be heard with the hood closed or even worse inside the cab, I'd get it to the dealership and insist they take a look. This could be valve noise and only noticable when the motor is warm and all the metal is up to operating size. Everything actually gets just a little bigger when it's warm. So the valves could be stretched or not adjusted right. Does it change at all when you accelerate or is it only at idle?
I've got the same problem on my truck with just over 225 miles. Sounds fine at start up and while traveling down the road. I hear nothing coming from the engine compartment. However, once I reach my destination and put the truck in park and let it idle for a few minutes before shut off I hear, easily inside the cab, valve noise. Sounds almost like a diesel and is very annoying, but if I slightly rev the engine I don't hear it anymore. Now that a few guys have posted it could be injectors, I somewhat want to believe that's it. I remember test driving a lightning once and told the salesman when I got back it had a "clicking" sound coming from the engine, he said nothing to worry about it's just the injectors. However, when I go back for my first oil change I'll have it looked at.
My 04 SCab FX4 does the exact same knocking as Ultramax 21 "Sounds almost like a diesel and is very annoying, but if I slightly rev the engine I don't hear it anymore". The service tech at my local dealer said there have been many complaints of this nature. However, Ford will not tear into the engine to actually find the problem until after the first scheduled oil change - 5,000.00 miles! My dieseling sound isn't getting any better or worse with time, so I guess I'll wait 2400 more miles and take it in again!
I've came to a new conclusion, it's just the injectors. I came home tonight and while letting my truck idle down I realized something, I didn't hear the "knocking/valve clicking" noise. I also had the A/C on and the blower on the lowest setting while sitting there, I turned the A/C off and instantly heard the noise. Turned A/C back on and listened VERY close and I could hear it. Keep in mind the fan blower was on setting "1" so it wasn't generating very much noise. This leads me to believe it has to be the injectors because the fan blower on setting "1" does generate just a little noise, enough to drown out the clicking of the injectors.
Unless it suddenly gets worse I'm no longer worrying about this, and I'm gonna go to a Doctor about my addition to this website and for paying to much attention to small detail!
My 5.4 3V is making the same ticking noise ...Sounds like valve tappet clearance to me ...Took it dealer and he told me that was normal engine clatter..yeah right...My PCM fix is supposed to be out in April ..I will get them to look at again...Mine definetly doesnt sound like a rod knock
i have a f 159 04 5.4 super cab with 300 miles have the same knock when warmed up sound like the bottom end i brought it to the dealer they here it and tell me its normal i dont buy that so i called ford direct and now i am waiting for a reply
Have the same motor with 9000 miles on it. It had the noise from the passenger side since day one. Dealer says it's normal and that "everyone" mentions it. Get out and lift the hood up. No noise! It's either the injectors as others have mentioned or it's coming from one of the other belt driven devices. Otherwise, my engine is smooth as glass. Since I always have my stereo on, I hardly ever hear it.
The noise you are hearing is a cam knock. It is always on the passenger side. I had the Ford Plant Engineer diagnose the noise and had the cam phaser replaced twice. Each time the noise was worse. I was finally able to get my engine replaced and the noise is still there. I know it is a new engine because I had my old engine stamped. The cam knock is not has loud and the old engine cam knock but I can still hear it. You can hear it loudest with the windows up air and music off. I feel it is a defect in the engine but Ford states that it is a "natural operational characteristic" of the engine. That's their way of saying live with it! You have to decide on whether to keep the truck or believe Ford that this knock will not adversely affect your engines performance. I'm still trying to make up my mind! Good luck.
I have an 04 F-150 FX4 with 3500 miles on it and it is in the shop right now for the knocking sound. The dealership said that it was the cam phaser or sensor something to that effect. The new part was order but it will not be here until next week because it is on back order. So there is a problem and they do know about it because the part is on back order.
yea but when its cold its fine .try this when the engine is cold and running lift the hood and put hand on the oil fill and its fine. when the engine is warmed to normal temp you here the knock and you feel the knock when you put your hand on the oil fill . i think the oil is to thin . cause when the oil is cold it is thicker when warm the oil is thinner . thats what i think
Had drivers side replaced within 4000 miles.Fraid with so many of us having phaser troubles so early,it might become as common as a CPS or the valve cover wire harness coming apart on the powerstrokes.
Hey does anybody have a step by step (with pics) on how to change these phaser out on your own?
Bet the dealer will charge a nice chunk of change to replace those puppies when our trucks get out of warranty.
