The diesel sound is completly normal. IF anyone has driven a vehicle with a large V8 (5.4 is not that large really), they all sound like that at low RPM's. Its completly normal. The ticking (I think) is just the injectors, though it does seem to be louder on the passenger's side. This is the same motor they have been using for a few years now, just different heads. In my opinion, ford did an excellent job on these truck as far as keeping the sound down.
I have the engine knock also. I does not do it all the time. I have also heard the diesel sound on my engine which it does all the time and i do believe it is normal for the engine. The engine knock on the other had comes from the passenger side of the engine and it sounds like the power steering pump is cavitating if that is possible. If you watch the fluid in the power steering reservoir, it will fluctuate in sync with the knocking sound. IT seems to do it after the engine is warm and you let it idle for awhile.
I have 2 1/2 years left on my warranty. The truck runs fine. If the noise gets louder or Ford puts out a fix I'll take it in. Otherwise I'm just gonna drive the crap out of this truck. It's too much fun to drive to have it sitting in the dealer.
I had 2 new cam phasers put in my truck to try and correct the problem, the second one was "certified", meaning that it was guaranteed to be a good part. The first replacement phaser was louder than the original, and the "certified" one was even louder. Thats when I finally was able to get my new engine and I'm back to square one. I believe all the engines have this cam knock, you just have to know what to listen for.
I have an 05 superduty with the 5.4 and it has this "diesel" sound when it warms up, only when idling. If anyone has talked to their dealer and gotten any good information on this please reply. I am planning to have it looked at when I have the first oil change but would like to be as informed as possible first. Thanks.
OK guys, I have a little info here that might be of interest to you. Dont get upset and run down to your dealers thinking this is related to your noises you are hearing. Ford released a TSB 04-22-1 for some 2004 F150's and some 2005 F-Super Duty's built between 7/19/2004 and 9/15/2005 that may have a check engine light with missfire codes, spark knock, and or piston scuffing. They will have to look in the cylinders with a boroscope to look for engine damage (scuffed cylinder walls). If there is damage they will replace the long or short block depending on the damage, and then reprogram the pcm. It doesent say it in the TSB but my feeling is they are or were running the engine to lean. Just my thoughts, dont hold me to it.
If you are not experiencing spark knock, this probably does not apply to you.

There was another post on this subject and I think my sound is in the exaust system. It's either bad/loose converter material or gaskets going bad. It does get worse as it warms up, and when your under the truck it sounds louder on the back of the motor then the front. Next oil change I'm going to hit up the dealer.
I've got the same noise, but I've always attributed it to the cycling of the "charge motion control valves" These little butterflies have to move to provide the function that Ford says they provide....
can anyone tell me what that knocking noise is from on the pass side when warmed up they say its normal but it seems to be getting louder i have only have 1000 miles on this piece of junk now when i take off at a stop i feel a lag and sometimes a clunk
That noise is the cam phaser sensor, it goes on the front of the cam shaft and the noise should only be heard from the passanger side. I had mine replaced and the knocking noise is back and I think it might be worse, but I will keep driving it until I here of another fix. Ford is not the only one with this problem my mother in law has a new 2500 Chevy with the 6.0L and we heard the same noise last night, When she pulled up it sounded like a duramax.
Have The New F-150 Lariot With All Options (600mi. Now). But This Is Not To Include A Knocking In The Engine. The Dealer Has Said It Is "normal" But For Some Reason I Just Don't Believe Them! It Is Not There When It's Cold, but Starts Up When The Engine Has Been Driven And Up To Temp. seems To Come Off The Passenger Side Of Engine Only. Sound Like A Bottem End Knock But Can't Be Heard On The Drivers Side. Anyone Other Than Me Hear It.
I have a 05 SCREW FX4 with only 230 miles and have the knock also. I here it from thr driver side but not the passenger. I have an appointment with the dealer this afternoon.
