I was not aware when I ordered my 250 superduty V10 with electronic 4x4 shifting that the only hub options were locked and auto which I,ve been led to believe is more closely related to full time 4 wheel drive. My fear is that since my fuel mileage has gone from 9.1 to 10.1 after 1000 miles that it will not see much more of an increase and I,m now having regrets about not opting for the manual shift 4x4.
I think you might be mistaken on the operation of the hub's and 4wd mode.. Basically, the SD definately does not have or recommend that you run in 4wd full time. It is not designed for this and running in 4wd on hard surfaces will drastically increase wear and tear on the components.
The hubs as you described have 'locked' and 'auto'.
auto= hubs will be 'unlocked' when your in 2wd mode (on ESOF selector), and they will automatically lock when you switch it to 4wd mode.
Locked= hubs are locked. If your 2wd,only rear wheels are getting power from the transfer case, but since the hubs are locked, all of the front wheel components are being driven by the front wheels. (So, don't run with hubs in locked, if your in 2wd)
I'm not 100% sure of why ford has both the auto and locked modes, (as auto should work all the time). However, the true 4wd die hards love the fact that the hubs have a manual lock option.. I think it has something to do with 'auto locking' hubs sometimes not 'locking' in some extreme conditions. (ie, extreme cold, or vacum hoses being knocked off).
Just had my truck into the dealer for (hub noise), at least 1 auto/locking hub is bad and gives the appearance that my front axles are turning constantly which has led to less than expected fuel mileage.
