locking hubs

OK- I've owned 4x4's in past but am stuck on this one.
Just bought my first Ford- An F250SD 4x4 Crew cab V10. It is a Lariat and has the shift on fly four wheel drive select. I was cleaning rims and noticed a lock for hubs. I did not realize I would still have to "lock" the hubs with the "shift on fly" - Did I miss something?

They are just backups in case the automatic system fails.

The two positions on the hubs are lock and auto. The lock is to mannually engage the hubs in the event they do not lock as they should. ie. vacuum or electrical problems
