starter relay idiot
I have a F 150 1988 302. 165,000 miles. I replaced the starter relay and along with a battery and alternator several months ago. The starter melted my battery cables and relay so I replaced starter. This was the initial problem. I have had an intermittent starting problem ever since. My truck will start fine for a week or two and than all of a sudden I will have to by pass the ignition switch at the relay to start the truck. This begins with a kind of buzz noise. I go to the relay and play with the green wire which allows the radio to come back on and the engine compartment light to come on. That tells me I have juice and can now junp the truck at the relay. Once that starts to happen it will not start normally again. I am on my third relay and am thinking I have some how got the wrong wires on the wrong side of the relay.
I have the connections like this. On one side of the relay I have a large black wire coming from the starter. There are not any other wires attached to that side. On the other side of the relay I have I have a single green wire that if I wiggle or turn makes the hood light come on and I can jump it. I have a double Black into a fusible link comes out yellow on the other side of the fusible link. The posotive battery cable is also on that side of relay.
Any wisdom would be appreciated.
