86 f 150 straight 6. On the starter relay there are only 3 connections instead of 4. bat in, out to starter, and S(I think).
The truck wouldn't start my brother found a black wire with a fuseable link laying next to the relay. It looked to him that it was connected to battery cable end on the relay. He wrapped it around the battery post on the relay and the truck starts now. Does this sound right? The haynes manual only shows the 4 post relay.
If this is wrong could it be draining the battery overnight?
That sounds right. That's probably the smaller wire that powers the whole truck. The 80-up trucks don't need a 4 terminal relay, the 4th terminal was a place to send 12v to the coil when cranking, and on the 80-up trucks they had this feature built into the ignition switch. A 4 terminal will usually work, just leave the 4th "I" terminal empty.
sounds about right, but make sure you make a proper connection now that you've figured it out. "he wrapped it around the post" doesn't sound proper from here - should have a ring terminal on there and be properly mounted, otherwise it'll eventually lose contact and leave you stranded.

Yeah, I will put a proper end on it now that I know it is right.
He just got the truck about a month ago, pretty simple truck for him to learn on.
