Getting ready to rebuild the C4 in my 79. Is there anything I should know about that might be unexpected before hand. Oh, the reason for rebuild is it would stick when the truck was first started and have to drive for a little while before it would stop.
Naw, C4's are easy if you have a good manual. Haynes is good, and a few others. The only things to watch out for are drivetrain (in tranny) and clutch pack clearances. Use seal protectors on the clutch pistons, and DON'T force anything. Also, they don't mention this in the manuals but I've had better luck NOT using a sealer on the gaskets!
I have 1979 302 C4 as well. This has been stated in other threads and it happened to me. When you remove filter a slug and spring will pop out. It is your throttle pressure valve. Don't let it shoot out and don't put it in upside down or you will experience a severe banging on acceleration like trans is coming through the floor. Metal valve, rounded-end, into valve body first; then spring; and use filter to hold it until all filter bolts are in position. Good luck and let us know how your rebuild goes.
Thanks for that imput rainbow, I dropped the pan today and removed the filter sure enough the metal piece was backwards (cupped side up) instead of pointed side. Shes giving me a strong shift into reverse and a decent shift into drive now. i may just leave as is now and save my paper for a recon C6 i've been wanting.
Great; glad to help! I put valve in upside down; spring first then valve against filter during an ATF oil change. Under acceleration it would bang and felt like it was going to destruct. Before driving farther; I consulted this website and a link and found a diagram of the correct installation. If your not expecting it; that spring and valve could come flying out and you may not know it or lose it on the garage floor. Haven't seen this on other automatics I've worked on and no warnings with the new filter or in the Haynes manual.
