ok, i bought this truck from a guy who had it buried in his garage. he said it is a 1947 ford pick up. i went out and got the motor number which is 99c 799399. can anyone please tell me what kind of truck i have? i am thinking it is a 1/2 ton but what year and motor did it have? thanks in advance for any help you can give.
You should have one more number in the prefix to determine the year.
45=599C 46=699C 47=799C
What you do have is a 1/2 pickup with a flathead V8 engine.
However, there are no practical differences between those three years. Your truck should have vertical grill bars. You might check out the galleries in the bar on the right side of this page and look thru pictures. (when the gallery page comes up, click on year in the search filter and select 1947 - you'll get where you want to go quicker)
thanks, but the 45 to 47 all looks alike, and the first number off the plate is illegible. i had a cop drive by and asked them if it was the right number and they got the exact same numbers off i did. any other suggestions on how to find out the year?
Welcome to the wonderful world of Fords. Vins weren't a big deal when these were produced. As you've noticed 45-47 are basically identical. The last 6 digits probably tell what year it was produced, but I don't have a breakdown of those.
You can check a frame rail in the engine compartment. Also might be a number under the cab. These are all light stampings, so scrub with a solvent and soft bristles or brillo pad and use a light at an angle.
I take it you got this number off the transmission/bellhousing. It's got to be one of these, and 45 is unlikely, so trying to see either a 6 or 7 as the first one. There should also be a star ahead and at the end of the string.
There will be a second VIN number stamped on top of the driver's side frame rail, a few inches ahead of where the forward cab mount is. Scape the rail, 60 yrs of crap hide the stamping very easily. It will start with a star, and have a 5, 6, or 7 as the first number. Although with the last 6 numbers as 799399, sounds like it might be a '46.
