It all depends on if you are leaving the stock engine, and what kind of traffic you drive in. If you were going to be putting in a more powerful engine and traveling highway speeds you may want to think about upgrading the brakes. But for a stock, or mild motor, and just around town driving, the stock brakes should be fine. Just rebuild with new parts and keep them well maintained.
Power brakes add a lot of ease to stopping but your brakes should still be kept in good condition. The only problem with that is finding a good vacuum off the origional motor.
Then there is the contaversy over the resivior being so low that air leeks into the master cylinder. Some people have fixed this by adding a line on the origional resivior to a seperate resivior, and still others fixed the problem by just placing a swinging petal assembly in the truck placing the master cylinder on the firewall.
