I need help, my son's 1990 Bronco intermittently will make a loud "pop" coming from the right front wheel area when the brakes are first applied. The steering wheel will shimmy until you come to a complete stop. You can then usually drive it all day with no more problem. I have jacked the front end up and there is no play in anything, we replaced the brakes several months ago any they are still good. I am thinking of replacing the wheel bearings as a starting point although they appear OK. He does have the automatic hubs, not the manual ones. Anyone have any ideas?
some ideas, lugs tite, wheel bearing, caliper mounts, ball joints,. if your getting wheel shimy and you dont find any play anywhere, you may want to have the front rotors turned for high spots, one could have a slight warp in it, DW ?????
Along with what DW2455 mentioned, you might want to check youre radius arm bushings. If they are worn out, the forces of braking could make the whole assembly move, and result in the clunk from that side. This might not apply, since you said you checked everything over in the braking system, but my father had a similar clunk on his bronco. As it turns out. the bracket holding the calipers had actually loosened and caused one of the bolts to "dissapear". When he would get on the brakes, he would hear a clunk. It turns out the whole assembly moved during braking.
also check the caliper retainer. they have a bad tendancy to move as wheelma1 said. i'm not sure if you have the compression retainer or a real bolt, but I know for a fact that the compression retain can back itself out and let your caliper move around
im with the other guys, have the rotors turned. Just to eliminate the chance of warped rotors. Also try driving in reverse then applying the breaks a few times. This may adjust your breaks some(if thats the problem). hope this helps.
