Unhappy help!!! starting problems

I have an 87 b2 2.9 4wd. last night i got into to start the truck, turned the key, the engine started but the ignition kept cranking and cranking like I had turned the key too far. it kept cranking until it drained the battery. I tried to jump it but as soon as i touched the cable to the positive post, the truck jumped like it was trying to start even though i had the keys in my hand!!!
is the starter stuck? i had a similar problem with it not starting about three years ago and had the fuel pump relay replaced. please help!!!

Change the soleniod first. For the starter to keep running the solenoid needs to be engaged to send current to it.

It can. It is worth a try.
If that dosen't cure it, there is a possibility the start function in the key system is hanging up. I would try the soleniod first.

i recently have been having problems with my b2 dying while i am driving. the rpms drop dramatically. sometimes i can catch it by tapping the gas pedal so it doesnt die. this is a potentially very dangerous situation for me. is this related to the solenoid problem? or could it be a fuel pump/filter problem? i changed the fuel filter ( the one under the driver side door) about three weeks ago but it didn't seem to help.

Like 68torino sez, it might be a bad ignition switch. Try this: remove the slip fit wire from the starter relay, if it stops cranking replace the ignition switch
