After hearing some remarks on thje performance of the y-block,I understand it would help performance to convert it to dual exaust. What exaust manifold would I need to convert it?is there a motor I might be able to get them from,or is it something that has to be ordered? The drivers side manifold seems to be the problem. It would look a little strange to loop it back,I would think.Would I have to replace both,or just one?Mine is the 272 y-block,if there is any difference to them.thanks
You can do a couple of things. Ram horns are the easiest and if you can find a f-350/f-600 truck with the factory dual exhaust(292 y block of course)from 56-64 I believe, be warned they are not cheap!!
Second, aftermarket header made by patriot, sanderson, or reds could be purchased and would fit(also pricey.)
Lastly,(I think?) you could cap off the passenger side manifold and run a pipe off the front of the drivers one back under the motor for duals or a extra passenger car passengerside manifold can be turned around(it will still exit in the front) on the drivers side for an easier turndown. -4speed
Thanks 4speed.That gives me an idea on what to look for. There don't seem to be many of the old trucks around this area,so i'll check into ordering some maybe. The header option sounds good also. Thanks for the reply.
the first time i saw one coming of the front i wondered why.i wondered why they didn,t use a car manifold, but i hearplace there,s something in the way at the back.the best place to find rams horns is on cabovers.
Hi 312.I had the same impression.I thought it was a neat feature, but now I'm not so sure.lol.Seems it may be expensive to correct the problem of adding dual exaust.Everything seems to be expensive when replacing things on the old truck,so i guess it comes as no surprise.
John, Just got my 54 F100 with 239 back from exhaust shop. I installed Sanderson headers(nice welds), dual Flowmasters(picked up on Ebay for 35.00 each) and plumbed it with 2 1/4 pipe.
SOUNDS GREAT. Made a real nice looking system running pipe over rear axel and out the back.
The only problem I ran into is the oil stick tube thru the center of header pipes on passenger side....had to bend slightly.
I ended up using a set of horns on my 64, found them on a heavy duty truck about 12 years ago, paid 85 bucks each but glad I bought them, are very easy to use for dual exhaust, I found out the hard way that a car manifold for drivers side wont work, is blocked by clutch linkage with manual tranny, also I believe the steering box interfere with it also. I like those heavy cast iron horns because they dont have any leakage problems, only they are very hard to find, also beware of ramhorns for the early lincoln blocks, they look very similar, the bolt pattern is what you must look for. The ford horns have 7 bolt holes strait in line, the lincoln ones are staggered.
rams horns are really getting hard to find at a good price.i live in the country and only managed to find one set and they where still using the truck so no deal.everything is expensive and hard to find on this old stuffand sometimes you wonder why.however these thoughts usually pass.
I caped off the rh manifold and have a pipe raped around by the fuel pump to run my duals it works well. But it doesn't look very good. So I am buying headers. If I was going compleatly stock look I think I would go with ram horns.
Thanks for the reply guys. These ram horns sound like a good way to go also.Spring is finally here,so it's time to hit the junk-yards and back roads.I appreciate you help.
I recently had dual exhust in my 1960 292. Well i finally went to Sacramento Ford and picked up some headers. My truck system is now awesome. After all these years my truck is puurring like a kitten. If was worth the drive about 90 minutes from San Fransisco. They have it all. I only spent 3 hours in the store.
