well iam looking up pieces and parts for the 72 f-100 4x4 i just bought and i am getting confused from what iam finding in parts list the 360 was avaliable untill 71 then in 72 they dropped in the 390. maybe iam just retarted and cant read right but could some one let me knoe how to identfie a 360 from a 390 so i will know exactally what iam working with....thanks in advance
Just by looking at it, can't tell. Most all FE's are identical on the outside, and almost all have 352 on them somewhere.
You've got to measure stroke.
well crap then....does anyone know if the 360 was an option in a 72 f-100 4x4 custom.....but from what i understand the 360 and the 390 are like brothers and have many interchangeable parts....correct?
I've seen lots of F-250's up in the junkyard with 390's in them. I can tell by looking at the sticker on the valve cover, if it's still intact. You may want to start your search there.
Yep, you can pull the guts out of one and stick them in the other. Bore's the same, everything is the same except for stroke.
Both motors, according to Chilton's, were offered that year.
The 390 would probably have been an option over the 360, this is a guess...don't know for sure on this.
thanks rusty ill check it out but i dont think there are any stickers on the valve covers the only writing on them say "power by ford" ...i dont know if those valve covers are stock but i kind of like them
The FE was offered into 1976 in the trucks, however, most of the 4x4 were only equiped with the 360, unless you knew somebody at Ford... You probably have a 360, of course the PO could have swapped in a 390, but you will need to check the stroke to be sure. The 360/390 share the same block, just a different crank/rods/pistons combo.
well i was looking at basic stuff cam headers intake carb but what threw me was i was looking at a radiator and they had them from 68-71 360 then 68-72 390 i dont really know my attenetion span on reading skills suck so maybee i just dont understand
Bore's the same, everything is the same except for stroke.
Whoa back there pardner! You are almost correct. Remember that if you change from a 3.5 stroke to a 3.78 stroke without changing anything else your piston is going to stick out past the top of your block deck. You would have to either change the pin location on the piston, or go with the same piston but a shorter rod. Ford went with a shorter rod. So in summary, everything is the same except the stroke on the crank and the length of the rods.
Sorry, I considered that in the equation, but not the statment.
But, that's what I meant. Good catch
I figured it was probably just an oversight. Although I talked to a guy a couple of years ago that had done the conversion and was amazed when I told him the rods were different. He was using 360 rods! All I can figure is the pistons he used were dished and had a real short compression height to get away with it. Go figure.
