Does anyone know or know where I can find what years Explorer (4WD or AWD) has both a V8 and independent front end - as opposed to the 4wd version of twin I-beam front end. Also need to know both the wheelbase - appeard to be about 112" - and the track.
I'm in the planning stage of building a 49/50 Ford street rod, and being a proud owner of both a 91 Explorer and a 93 4WD Ranger, I got this wild idea of building the 49-50 using Explorer frame/running gear, and converting suspension to airbag. Can't use the old swing axle like on my Explorer and Ranger since I will need to lower it. Thought this would make a really trick ride...... and different from all the rest!!!

Didn't find the wheelbase/track on your site, but did find something more interesting to this project - AWD instead of 4WD!!!
Aren't some of the later Explorers independent also??
This whole idea sounds better all the time!!! HMM - the classic look of a 50 Ford, with all the ammenities of a late model Explorer - 5.0L V8, od auto, AWD, cruise, air, etc,etc...... and ALL FORD!!!
'91 - '94 2 and 4 door had TTB IFS/8.8... '95-'01 2 and 4 door had true IFS/8.8... '02-up 4 drs IFS/IRS, Sports still have IFS/8.8. I'm not positive, but I believe the AWD option came in around '97 or so. It is a V8 option only.
WOW - looks like I need to start looking for a wrecked Explorer!! Altho the idea of using an IFS/IRS sounds the best, I think I'll go after a 97 with 5.0 and AWD - easier to hop up the V8 than the V6, and easier to adjust the whelbase.
