I've always been interested in upgrading the performance and drivability of my 64, but just can't commit to hacking up a perfectly good, mostly original truck, especially a "B" code. I took my wife's '07 Explorer out the other day, and the thought popped in my head "I wonder if this generation Expy is feasible for a complete drivetrain swap?". I like the looks of the CV swaps, but for practical purposes, I'd like to have the ability to go places that a lowered truck just can't accomplish, as I have a 40 acre farm with creeks, hills ditches, etc. So I started doing a little research, and the '07 wheelbase is 113.7 and the front track is 60.9. That's pretty damn close to a SWB Slick's dimensions. With the various configurations of the Expy, (2WD, 4WD, V6, V8, and their relatively cheap cost to pick up (especially if you can find one totaled, or severe body damage), this MAY be a good project. I have a junk yard in my area that specializes in old Ford Trucks near me, and there are a few other possible SWB candidates scattered around that could be had pretty cheap. Has anyone seen this done, or have any thoughts on it? I know the Expy is a pretty reliable vehicle, the wife has had no issues at all with hers, plus you have all of the modern features in a Slick. Seeing "Project Eco-Slick" kind of got my gears spinning.
