my truck bought 3-98 v-10 has 16000 miles on it ive never once heard this the only thing i hear is if i am pulling a load and have bad gas the valves will rattle some till i down shift Is this piston slap a problem on the older ones like mine or the newer one? I thought this motor was around for a few years before i bought mine and all the bugs worked out thats why i was wondering if ford changed something
Piston slap usually occurs right at start-up and only lasts 3-5 minutes. You can also hear it if you start driving after start-up. Kinda clatters as the tranny shifts. Once the engine is warm it stops.
What your hearing is not piston slap.
Slap only occurs on cold starts and lasts just a few minutes, (even at idle).
What your likly hearing is what Ford Techs are calling a 'flutter'.
It sounds alot like an engine ping, but it's really just an exaust airflow fluctuation your hearing.. Its not harmful in any way..
Every SD gasser I've driven has this sound.. Its much more noticable when you have a manual tranny. It only occurs when your accelerating or demanding power, and not at constant speed or coasting.
