Who has had a crate engine installed

It looks like my 2000 f250 v10 has a bad engine. Bad wrist pin or piston slap. Who has had a crate engine installed? How much did you pay?? Is it a good idea to get it done at the dealership? This really sucks because I always kept up on the maintenance with napa full synthetic oil. It only has 115000 miles.

I wouldn't consider a new crate engine for a truck that old. I'm not even sure you can get them anymore, as I'm pretty sure anything you get through a Ford dealer will be a reman.

I'd look for a used engine. Yours is an anomaly, those engines routinely go 200,000+ with regular maintenance. Check out Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market and see what you can find.

Are you sure this issue is correct?

wrist pin failure almost never happens anymore.
piston slap is not a death toll..
bad injector's can sound like piston slap.
so can poor fuel pressure.

get a full electronic engine scan.

remanufactured engines should be available..

a New v10 almost ZERO. and big bucks.

and why a dealer... a good local garage.. way cheaper..

and a junk yard engine can give you another 100,000 miles.
a low mileage wreck...

a brand new crate engine with install, my guess would cost you more than what the truck is worth. I would probably go with jasper or something like that does reman engines and be on the road for under 5k again. But then again it might be worthwhile looking at the cost of the repair vs what the truck is worth. Might be more cost effective to move on.

if the rest of the truck is mechanically sound i wouldnt think twice about a crate motor or a jasper motor. Its true it may cost more than the truck is worth blue book but its cheaper than buying another truck or buying one of the same value or close to repair costs not knowing nothing about it. Of course i am one to drive a automobile till its dead, fix it again and drive it till its gone.

Have you looked into what it would cost to rebuild yours? I would stay away from the dealer you will pay an arm and leg, nothing wrong with a good crate motor if the truck is worth putting into it.

Ya the dealer said 29 hours to install a reman engine. He didnt have a price on the engine yet. that would be 2600.00 just for labor. That seems like alot. Most reman engines like jaspor or J&S engines are about 4000.00. I am going to get another opinion on the cold knock-Rattle. Im running some Marvels in the oil for a week and then change it.

I found another mechanic that wants to pull the valve cover and start the engine with it off. He thinks it could be a rocker or lifter. The sound is louder by the side if the block than on top but he says sounds travel. Guess it can't hurt. Anyone tried a power source engine ?

im considering an engine replacement as well. reason is if i fix the left side of the motor at ford today for 2/3rds the cost of a DIY total reman engine...then in 6 months the right side of the engine has a problem for another 2/3rds the cost of a reman engine (at fords labor and parts rate), would would be paying more and still have a used engine that could fail in other areas.

Personally I wouldn't invest in another new engine for it. As Tom said above, look for a low mileage used engine from a wreck.

Anything up to 2004 should be a direct plug and play setup.

I installed a v10 from a 2002 E450 RV. It had 45,000 miles on it and was in good shape. I paid 750.00 for the motor, all wiring and pcm and it all had 3 month 3,000 guarantee from a salvage vehicle website.

The truck now has 165,000 miles on it and hadn't skipped a beat. While it was out I was able to replace the timing components, all the exhaust manifold studs, oil pump, water pump and valve cover gaskets.

After everything I only charged 1,200 for parts and labor.

I recall reading or hearing somewhere that these V10's had an issue in the valve train under one of the valve covers. Have the mechanic take a look.
In one of your posts you said it was a COLD knock / rattle? My dads pickup had a bad knock and rattle on the passenger side, but only when it was cold. His turned out to he a $300 fix at a local garage.
A few years back I had the engine go in our 01 expedition. It was a 5.4, not the V10, but I had similar questions. I checked into rebuilding, checked into used and finally settled on a rebuilt motor. The cheapest junk yard motor I could find had 150,000 miles on it. The truck it came out of had been in a front end collision, it had an oil leak so had not been tested. They still wanted $1100 for it. A tested used junk yard engine was around $1200, but I didn't want to buy someone elses problems. I got a rebuilt motor with a 75000 mile 3 year warranty for $2200. I don't remember the rebuilder, but it was the one the local Ford garage buys from. I changed it out myself in a weekend, so it was pretty cheap. 100,000 miles later and it is still going.
My 99 F150 spun a bearing a year later. I rebuilt that one myself for under $1000. The problem with rebuilding if you have a busted piston or bad pin is the labor and machine work. It will probably have to be bored out if it has had slap on a cylinder wall.
Have the second mechanic look at it and see what he thinks. It might be worth the money to find out it is something minor in the valve train.

Thanks for all the replies. The truck is at another mechanic shop now. This one is the only shop that has been willing to dig into the problem. They are going to pull the valve cover and check it out. As far as a used engine I am also worried about getting someones old problem. That could be a lot of money down the drain. A completely re-manufactured engine from Powersource is 3100.00 and free shipping both ways. So I may go that route if I need to. I hope its something simple. The sound is louder on some days and not on others. Seems as if it were a wrist pin it would always sound the same.

I'd recommend a Motorcraft reman if you go that route. AutoNation Ford sells them for $3,600, and they come with a 3-year, unlimited mileage warranty. Your local dealer may be able to match that price and you wouldn't have to fuss with shipping.

Is the noise coming from the right valve cover area?

It could be what my truck did. The right valve cover has a oil baffle where the pcv valve goes into. Mine fell off. I hope yours works out.
