I have a 1981 f250 with a 351. I just recently purchased this truck and I want to get more power out of it..what are some of the less expensive things I could add to get more horse power preforably things that are kinda quick and easy to install. If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreaciated.
It has very high miles but it only had one owner and he took really good care of the engine...It runs great as it is now im just looken for alittle more power. I'll check out these parts and see what I can afford. Why did you say single exhaust? If I was to put dual exhaust on it would that not work as well? Which would have more power and better sound? Thanks for the help.
well a single exhaust will produce more torque then a dual setup. also its hard to route the exhaust becuase of the type of tcase we have. something else, you might have the 351m so besure you know what engine you have before ordering parts because the 351w and 351m are different.
I am not sure but somone told me it is a 351 clevland..its has a marking on the intake that has the letters cf inside of a circle. Also is any 351 better than another or are they all just about the same?
the cleveland was a great motor but didnt come stock in a truck or bronco. it was more highly used in mustangs and some other cars back in the late 60's. the modified came during the whole smog restrictions in the 70's. personally its an ok motor. not much for aftermarket parts, cant pass a gas station with it (gas hog) and is very heavy. the 351w has a ton of aftermarket and been around for a long time.
if you have the cleveland its a strong runner and should have some decent output. there is a way to tell by the size of the intake manifold but im not sure what that measurement is.
the valve covers aredifferant on a M they have a raisd portion on the cover,a W dosentalsothe exhaust manifolds are differanttheM has one bolt dropped lower than the other, and the W bolts line up straight, just an observtion.
The Windsor has a 'wet' intake manifold, meaning the coolant passes through the intake. The thermostat housing bolts onto the front of the intake manifold and that is where the water outlet and upper radiator hose are connected. On the Cleveland and "M" motors, the water doesn't come out of the manifold.
first of all, a 351m is a 400 block. therefore its a bigblock. a windsor is a small block. its sort of obvious whether its a big or small block. M means modified. it means it has a bunch of smog junk on it. and last and most important, the M was only put in trucks from 78-80, they weren't around in 81. so i hope this answers your questions. but i need to know how much horspower my 351w has stock in my 86 f150. thanks...
I worked a lot with the carbed 351W's, and you realy want to wake it up, ya headers, 4bbl intake and carb will help, but the stock cams are SO mild, you will be tossing money away without a cam swap. Belive me you do nothing but pop in a mild proforamce cam, and you will be impressed.

The 351m/400 are not big blocks just use the big block bolt pattern. the only benifit to having this motor is it will make a 460 swap cheaper because you can use the same tranny.
