I have a 1989 E350 with a 351w that the throttle is sticking on. (very scary ) It's not the cable or pedal assembly, so I tried lubing the springs and the throttle shaft. That made a difference for a while, but it keeps coming back.
What kind of a job is it to take this apart, or can you even get it apart? Anyone ever seen this before?
Any help is greatly appreciated! It's gonna stick at a real bad time some day, and I'll be parked in the lobby of the local wal-mart....
If you're sure it's the throttle shaft/butterfly that's sticking, I'd say the shaft, or the bore for it, is worn out, letting the blades stick. You could drill/bush the hole, or find a good used throttle body in the junkyard. Is this a high-mileage vehicle? If so, a lower mileage one would be the fix and wouldn't take long to swap out. If you can be without it for a little bit, have a machine shop bush the shaft bore if you aren't equipped to do it yourself.
I had the same problem on an 88 351 EFI, usually happened when vehicle was shut off and restarted within about an hour. I swapped throttle bodies to fix the problem. BTW, if you decide to get another throttle body at the wreckers, the 302 and 351 throttle bodies are identical.
