03 - New AC TSB
For those who have the dreadful problem of the AC dying every ~30 minutes in high humitidy areas there is a new TSB out from Ford. I made an appointment to get the parts replaced on my truck the other day.

Some 2003-2004 Expeditions produced before 03-16-04 may exhibit an intermittent loss, or diminished A/C regester airflow. This is contained in Ford Article 04-5-9 Published 03-12-04.
Problem most often occurs when driving on the highway in excess of 30 min. in high humidity. This is due to ice formation in the evaperator core. This condition occurs only when the rear climate control is either not present, or not turned on.
The fix consists of the following:
4L1Z-19E992-AA kit evaporator freeze
W701696-S301 fastner
Operation 040509A for Navigator
Operation 040509B for Expedition

After ~30 minutes of driving the AC freezes up and stops blowing cold air. The kit stops this from happening.
Last summer when I was driving from Florida to Maryland about every 30-45 minutes I would have to turn off the AC and let the system defrost, then turn it back on.

I'm just wondering what the "kit" consists of.
What is it that they are changing or adding.
Dave-do you have the rear air con? Was it running at the time?
I have a 2004 built last Set 03 that I bought in Nov 03 and only had a couple of warm days that I used it. Both trips were over an hour and I didn't notice the problem. I was actually looking for it since I read about it here.
How did you find out about it and do suggest I get mine done?
Thanks---Bob

Yes, I have rear AC but it wasn't running at the time. I found out about this TSB at another Ford enthusiast board...and I confirmed it with a Senior Master Ford Technician on another site.
I'm not sure what the kit consists of...but I asked the Tech.
When I went in my local dealership (non-selling, gave crap service last time) I told them that Ford has now found a solution to the problem I had last August and asked them to order the parts first, before my appointment to save myself, the dealership, and the tech's time. Last August they didn't even diagnose it since they have no way of driving it for 30 minutes in high humidity. I was supprised they went ahead and ordered the parts, that was on the 22nd.

To service, install an evaporator assembly-mounted thermostatic cycling switch and disable the TXV-mounted thermostatic switch, using service Kit 4L1Z-19E992-AA. For vehicles built on or after August 2003, it is also necessary to order and install fastener W701696-S301. For installation procedures refer to the Service Kit instruction sheet.

Yes, my 2003 eb is in for the ac fix. Last week it was in for the rear end churning, Ford replaced the rear clutch plates. Left it today for the brake repl. and ac fix as well as a whine that sounded like was coming from the trans., got a call letting me know the whine was from the rear, and they are replacing the entire rear. Apparently to fix the ac they have to remove the dash, not too happy about that considering the rattles I already have.
Oh well.

The rear end swap may take half a day to a full day. We swap one out per day at least.
This is very interesting to me because this is what Ford said was wrong with my 03, yet it did not fit the circumstances. I do not live in a high humidity area and mine just cycled hot to cold , hot to cold. They bought it back but still is interesting me me. Hope to heck my 04 built in 11/03 does not start acting up. I am not sure I could take another A/C problem unless it truly is fixable.
I did notice in my 04 with the air on lately I feel it blowing warm once in a while, but then again I am not sure I am pushing the right buttons on this climate control air. I push A/C then set temp to the lowest it will go, 60, fan on high. Is that correct? Then if it is too cool, I either turn the temp to 65 or 67 and/or turn the fan down. Wished it just had low, med and high......

Raudy,
I have been severly chastized several times when in my wifes EB with the Climate Control--I use the fan speed, and she says it works better without touching the fan.
She just sets it at 68 and it runs fine for her--when I get in, I try to run it like my F350 and get it all screwed up. When she wants it colder, push the blue arrow--hotter, push the red arrow. And don't forget use the ac in the seats, if you have them.

How long should it realistically take to perform this TSB? My dealer has had my truck since early Monday morning (an appointment by the way) and it's mid-day Thursday and it's still not done. I've been calling every day, twice a day to bug them.
