I am ordering a 2000 F250, 4X4, SC, LB. I am getting the 5.4L. I can't decide if I should get the 4.10 or 3.73 rearend(I prefer limited slip which would be the 4.10). I am looking for info on mileage by anyone with either of the same setups as above, and any other related info. Should I give up the limited slip to have the higher gearing? I've already ruled out the V10 due to piston slap problems. Thanks for any help on this.
I chose the 4.10LS and am very happy I did.

The mpg is about the same as with the 3.73, if you drive less than 70mph, (like us on the east coast). In town, and on the highway hills, I'm able to keep it in OD all the time and the engine is at a great range, (2200 rpm at 65mph), which is not that high, but near peak torque rpm. I think it feel a little more sluggish with the 3.73.
I'm averaging 15.5 mpg with mixed city/highway driving, and have gotten 17.6 on the last long trip I took that was mostly highway.
You'll get slightly less mpg than me with 4x4 and auto tranny.
Also, the piston slap problem has been solved. Engines built after 4/99 will not suffer the problem. Also, the problem was more common on the 5.4L than the V10, mostly due to the numbers of 5.4L's sold vs the V10. But thats all a moot point because the problem is solved.
