Question Which way to go ????

I have a '96 F-150,302,E4OD A/T,4x4 Ext. Cab with 3.55 gears. I have a K&N filter in the stock air box, dual exhaust through the stock cat's with no mufflers and 32/11.50x15 tires. Now the question, I am totally confused on what to do next???? I would like more power and torque without sacrificing the 87 octane gas which most chips or programmers recommend. I have been reading most of the postings and found that the programmers offered out there will not adjust the tire sizes or gear ratio's on the 96 models, is this correct? I liked the idea of a programmer (Superchips or Hypertech) until I read this. What to do, what to do???? Thanks in advance for any help!!!

i'd say put mufflers on and if your dual exhaust is 2.5" drop it to 2 1/4 and you'll be happy

which way

First I'd fix that speedo. Go to the tech section of this board and find the 92-96 speedo fix. You can program the dash gage cluster to fix the oversized tires. I used "896" for 33" and "918" for 31". Try 904, the tire calculation figures out to 12 points per inch by my calculations. This should give you accurate readings across the range 0-? mph. Mine is off .2 by GPS. Next spend the money for the tuner, more options to use on the truck (87, 91 tow, 91 performance) and diagnostics to boot, the chip won't do that. 2 1/4" pipe lets you keep low end torque, MAGNAFLOW is the way to go. I've got a 96 F150 4x4 w/5.0 made a world of difference. superchip 1715 MAX tuner worth it, YES! just ordered the superchip 9100 custom tuner with 93 octane program, should smoke the 1715 but $100 bucks more, should be here 3/26 and I'll be gettin rid of the 1715 after some compairison runs (should be no compairison!!!).

I will check out the tech section that you recommended on the speedo fix, I have never heard of that and will check it out! Will the 1715 tuner let you adjust the tire sizes and gear ratios if I go that route? What other mods have you done to yours since you have 1 like mine? What type of air intake do you have? Thanks for the info!!!

my mods

1996 f150 short box, regular cab 4x4 with 5.0L

To date: K&N filter in stock air box, shorty headers, magnaflow cat back system (custom built at muffler shop) with 2 1/4 inch pipe, B&M shift kit (valve body mods) gives increased fluid flow with great shifts (firm and snappy), 3" body lift with 33" tires and speedo fix to gage cluster.
Truck came stock with off road package (dual front shocks and sway bars all around), tow package (included the trans cooler in-front of radiator), underdrive 2 pully set with gatorback belt.
Currently running a superchips 1715 max micro tuner, tuner is set to shift at increased MPH, no increase in pressure, did not need to set tire size (speedo fix took care of it) and 91 octane tow. Performance setting is even better.

BEAT a 02' ford with triton V-8 hands down!! Don't know the engine size, assume 5.4L

Just purchased the superchips 9100 custom tuner set to 93 octane. Am giong to sell the 1715 in a few days after the SC 9100 custom shows up. Difference was almost $100 between the two. This one should ROCK!!!

Milage is up a couple MPG, it won't adjust for gears but i think tire size is in the program (didn't use that setting--speedo fix took care of it).

with bigger tires the truck thinks it is going slower than it really is=MPG sucks=fix that speedo, i think it made a difference, really.

Hope this helps
Randy

Finally I got a response from somebody that has been there, done that and it is greatly appreciated!! I will look into purchasing a 1715 soon and adding a Flowmaster muffler to create some back pressure. It does have a setting for 87 octane because I'm not really looking for a big boost, I would like to just get up a small hill without the trans shifting 2 or 3 times and struggling with enough power. I saw the article in tech about the speedo cal. and it doesn't look very hard. I am going to print it tonight and study it for a try tomorrow. Thanks again!!

This is for ssn randy, I tried the speedo cal. and messed up!! I did it according to the chart in the article of the tech section. It said for me to use 8.86 for 32/1150x15 tires and about the time I remembered what you had said it was to late. I checked the speed against my wifes car and now it is off 3 mph the other way (she had 55,mine was 58). I was wandering if you can go back the other way to around 904 which is what you said and I remembered to late? when I hit the select button the numbers are going to keep going down. Any help would be great!!!

I got the speedo back around, if you keep hitting the select button it will get down to 500 and switch back to 1095 and then I came down to the correct setting that I should have set to begin with. Haven't checked it yet, I will check it on the way to work Monday to see if it is right. Thanks again for the help, Greg

speedo

Each inch of tire size is = to 12. you should be close. What if your wifes car is off. Do you have mile markers where you live? At 60MPH is should take 60 seconds to cover the distance.
