Greetings all! My 98 Ranger 3.0 has been having some MPG and pinging problems. I had no trouble codes on the OBDII. So after reading up, I figured I'd try some of the magical MMO spoken of here in the boards. Well, I filled up and added 4oz of MMO to the tank earlier today. Since then, the pinging has been even worse. Don't know about the MPG yet. Also, on the MPG subject. My tranny fluid needs changed and I have heard that can improve MPG. Is that correct? I used to get 20-23. Now I get 18-19. Mix of city/hwy. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Last tune up was about a year and a half ago. I changed the oil & fuel filter last month. Truck has 121800 on it. I've been thinking about going ahead and changing the plugs again. Might get a multi-meter too and check out the O2 sensors, even though I'm not getting any codes. Oh yeah, just remembered. It was throwing a code late last year/January this year. Said the #1 cylinder was misfiring. I replaced the plug in that cylinder(I know, I know...you're supposed to change them all) and the code cleared. Don't think it's related but figured I'd include it for info. sake

I used MMO for more of a preventative tool than a fixing tool, but it can help in some instances. For fuel system, i use sea foam, seems to work great for cleaning injectors and caron build up. Do you mean denotation or like a pinging sound coming from the motor, just trying to clearify. Did you replace with platnum plugs, they seem to make an engine denotate for some reason. Do you have a dist. less ignition? Can you adjust your timing? Could be a faulty CPS sensor making the timing be off. See if you can check with a timing light. Check fuel pressure also.
Thanks for the input 78fordman. I'll try the sea foam. Right now, the MPG seems to be getting better but it may just be wishful thinking on my part. I also am beginning to think the fuel gauge is goofy. Going 55MPH, it fluctuated b/w 1/2 and a 1/4 of a tank, speed was constant within 1-2mph. With the pinging, its what I was told was the problem. The symptoms were that when I accelerated up an incline, usually between gears 50-60mph, there was a rattling type sound from under the hood. After listening to it, I could see where it could be called pinging. In my original post here, I stated it had gotten worse. It did but it seems to have calmed back down to the above symptoms. I did replace it with a platinum, didn't realize at the time that you HAD to use DP in the 3.0L. Yes, its EFI so there's no distributor. From what I've read here, no I can't adjust the timing but I may have just missed it in the posts. I don't have a timing light or the equipment to check the fuel pressure.Having just gotten layed off, new toys are unfortunately not in the budget.
