I need to get a new carb for my 1977 F-250 with a 460 motor, automatic, 2WD, with 3.54 rear end. It is a trailer special supercab. I want to put on an edelbrock carb but I am not sure which carb to get. I use it mostly for a daily driver and to tow my boat or travel trailer. Max load in truck and pulling usually tops out at about 6,000 lbs. I also live and drive mostly between 3000 and 5000 feet above sea level. I would still like to get the
8 mpg its getting now. What CFM and what edelbrock carb would be the best for my situation? Any and all advice/opinions would be appreciated.
On the later 460 Ford used a Holley 4180 that was rated 600 CFM. It is a square bore design. I do not know if your `77 is square or spread bore.
If square bore, then the Edelbrock 600 CFM unit would be the right size, although many people use the 750. Bigger is not always better. If you don’t run the engine up to high RPM’s then the 600 is large enough and the smaller size will keep incoming air velocity up which will help with off idle torque. If you have EGR then get the emissions version, but if you don’t have EGR then you can go with the non-emissions version (model 1406 w/ electric choke).
No matter which model you go with, take the time to set it up as detailed in the Edelbrock owner’s manual. It will make a big difference in performance and mileage.
665.5CFM to go 5000rpm @ 100% wol. eff. Most engines are around 85% vol. eff. so a 600 is plenty. I run a 750 on mine, but it is cammed and things. It run's ok with a 600 Holley too.
I would suggest the 600 Edelbrock.
