Yes, there is. it pumps the oil from the bottom of the case to the main shaft. theres also a pickup filter inside. On mine the hose connection snapped after the bracket sheared.
so what is entailed in taking one of these apart i have removed them before in broncoII's but not bigger trucks and is there any tricks in taking it apart that i should know
and what am i looking for inside
I also hope to find some help on this thread. I have a BW1356 that went out in my 89 (only lasted 14000 miles from the last rebuild ) so I want to rebuild it myself. Any notes on dissasembly and/or where to get parts for these (ie pumps and forks) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
You are going to need a "Good" pair of snap ring pliers, and a pair of duckbill pliers to get it apart.
What usually happens after 100k miles or so, is that the pump arm wears through the ridge on the case and spins, breaking the pump arm and yanking off the hose in the process. Then you have no more oil being pumped to the bearings/gears/ect, and "Bad" things happen.
Another problem is the nylon tips on the shifter fork wear out, and the shifter fork starts eating into the flange, until it wears all the way through and leaves you stuck in one range.
Complete bushing/bearing/seals/gaskets kit is $90 - $100, oil pump kit $80 - $100, and then any other parts that are needed.
i believe they are dealer only unless you can find someone on the web that carries them. i had to call 8 dealer before i found the parts. I had to take the ferry to conneticuit form Long Island and dive and hour up to get the parts. NO ONE one LI had them and I didn't want to wait to have them shipped. Ask the dealer to do a search for the parts at another ford via the computer. The dealer computers can do the search.
Don't forget to get a new gasket for between the tranny and xfer case( less than $5).
Jeus did the rebuild on mne 6 weeks ago. Had the same prob. Stuck in low gear but shifted from 2WD to 4WD.
Keep us posted on the progress or any further questions.
is 200 bucks canadian a good price for a transfer case with a 4 month warranty
and i am assuming that they arent that hard to change on the big bronco i have only done it on BII's and these look alot bigger and heavier LOL
you could wind up with the same problem in a couple of months or be fine for years. its a gamble. for about $200 you could rebiuld the xfer case and be sure that it will last a long time.
you doing it. if you follow the link posted by steell it isn't too bad. you just need a really good snap ring tool. i think i took me about a half hour/ 45 min to remove the xfer case and about 2 hours to do the rebuild and another 30-45 min to reinstall. be sure to have a pan under the tranny/xfer case to catch traany fluid out of the tranny when you seperate the two units. and refill the xfer case before you put it in.
