I have a 98 Explorer XLT, and it has developed a VERY annoying rattle that seems to be coming from the right side in or around the dash board.
Has anybody heard or experience this and know of a fix.
Those dashboard rattles can be real boogers! All I can suggest is to sit over there while someone else drives and try to find the source. Reach around under there and feel and push on things to try to stop it. Maybe a mechanic's stethoscope, available from a parts store, would be helpful. The glove box door will swing all the way down if you push inward on the ends when it's open, more access that way. Maybe you already did all that, but it's all I can think of.
Well i know that my explorer (5.0L) used to have like a muffeled buzz coming frim in front on the pass. airbag when you punched it or put it under a strain at about 3500 RPM. About 1500 miles ago it just went away. So i was wondering if that could be the same thing?
I had an intermittant rattle. THe problem was a section of the wiring harness was just barely touching the back side of the dash. I fixed it by using electrical tape to tape that part of the harness to one that wasn't anywhere near the dash...good luck!
When I bought my '96 in 2000 with only 34k miles on it, it had a rattle too. Sounded like it was a rubbing type rattle. Well, I took it to the dealer and they found out it was the air duct in the center console. They rerouted the air ducts under there and the rattle was gone!

For lack of a better description that is what it sounds like. Thanks for all the thoughts. When I get the time I'll get back to you guys and let you know what i found.
[FONT=Comic Sans MS]My 96 EB had the rattle at highway speed (which turned out to be the passenger side airbag).
I did a detailed cleaning (especially of it's edges) then inserted cut strips from a matchbook around the edges to fill the gaps...rattle gone for over 2 yrs now!
Now if I could solve the driveline rattle problem, I'd be in heaven.
I too have a 98 Explorer XLT that had a rattle that seemed to be coming from the right side of the dash. Drove we crazy for a while. I then found that the rattle was actually coming from the antenna that on my Explorer is the non-retractable type mounted on the right front fender. Seems all the miles had caused the nut that secures the antenna to the fender to work loose allowing the antenna to vibrate at speed and causing a sound that sounded like a rattle in the right dash. I simply pulled the pastic cover that covers the antenna up a bit and retighten the securing nut. No more rattle. Also, afterwards be sure to push the plastic antenna cover down securily on the antenna mount or this will rattle also. Good Luck.
