heya! this is my first post!! I've got a 76 hiboy/4x4 w/extended cab. engine is a 460/automatic. I've read through a lot of pages in this forum but couldn't find an answer...this is what happend yesterday: tried to start up and only got a single 'click'. battery is good! so I cleaned all cables + connectors from batt to starter. now when I turn the key I get 'continuous very fast clicking' - but no engine turn. then I tried to turn the engine so I put the gear into 'D' and rocked the truck - it just started rolling. the same in "1' and '2'!! no turning of engine at all. does this have to do w/ the starter?? or the flywheel?? sorry..I'm a bit lost. any help would be great!!!
Check the ground for good contact too. If any of the cables have pressed on ends, they can go bad inside of the ends and give you trouble too. Otherwise, the starter or solenoid are bad.
Its most likely your solenoid, unfortuneatley, there is no alternative to the cheap parts store versions. I prefer to carry a spare, just because I know these things can just give out.
Keep in mind you can't push start an automatic. Have a friend hold the key in the start position and hit the end of the starter with a hammer, if its going bad you can usualy get a cupple more starts out of it this way.If that doesnt work, hold key in start and grab a hold of the starter cable, if the cable is getting warm ,the starter is junk.
thank you all!! (you can't push-start an automatic")...that explains that my truck even starts up when accidental in reverse...haha.. had some minor heartattacks there...
will start w/a new solenoid today. hopefully that'll work.
BTW. the guy I've bought the truck from put 4 disk brakes on it.(the brakes are great!). the only problem is, I've got no handbrake. someone mentioned a 'linebrake' as a cheap option. anybody out there that has this done???
