I have a 65 f100 with a 240. 4-speed, with granny gear. The Block is shot. I have a chance to buy a 300. Was wondering if the 300 would bolt right up to the 4-speed tranny that is currently in the pickup with the 240.
65, What are you having to pay for this engine? I hope not a lot because you can hardly give them away. You should be able to get one in great shape for a couple hundred or less.
I wouldn't exactly say that they are giving away 300 engines. But a long block remaned engine from advance costs something like $1100. And its rebuilt, with a warranty. The core charge is $150 or so.
So your junk yard 300 value is somewhere in between. Bottom end of 240/300 is strong, often good for 200k or more. Have they compression tested it for you? With good compression, less than 100k on the engine, I'd guess a fair price would be $300. Anything with more miles or poor compression, don't bother, as its not worth your labor to swap. I would never pay more than $500 even if they told me "Its been rebuilt 2000 miles ago" A warranty and peace of mind is worth $500 in and of itself.
I suppose there are regional variances there too. Also -- a reputable salvage place that says it has good compression and low miles is going to get more for the engine. Small shops and mechanics are not looking through the want adds when they have a customer with a blown 300 -- they call a large salvage yard first, and plunk down the $300 gladly cause they got a customer that wants his truck back.
I'm not disagreeing with you -- but as we know all too well with these trucks, the price can be all over the place. Supply and demand!!!
I'll stand by my analysis above though -- paying more than about $500 would never be a good idea. And expecting to pay less than $100 for a running engine is not reasonalble. Athough I bought one for $20 at a farm auction last fall. But that was luck, not skill.
Thx for the info guys! We went over to look at the engine today, and it didnt look good at all. He was asking $350 for it. Pretty steep for what he had laying there in the grass. Yes I said, "laying there in the grass" lol. Part of it seemed to even be in the ground. So its a big no go on that engine. Jowilker I see you posted you have one you been trying to get rid of. I'm interested in it! I tried to email you, but site wont let me yet. And I see No email addresses in post as "Forum Guildelines". Maybe you can email me from my profile to get this started. Thnx again to all for the info on the swap.
John is right. They are hard to sell. I replaced my 300 with an FE and tried to sell it. Finally sold it for half what I paid new. It only had 3000 miles on it too.
If I had it to do all over again, I would still put the FE in. Bolts up with minimal fuss and dollars.
65 I am in Durham North Carolina and if you go to our truck club site ncfto.org and look in the lower left corner you should see contact NCFTO. That should come to me.
