I think it's because the water is always flowing through the heater core, and the temp is regulated by blending different amounts of various air sources (unlike lots of other cars, where the temp is regulated by how wide open the valve to the heater core is.)

Lots of people install a valve in their heater hose and control it electrically or via vacuum from inside the cab... mainly because they couldn't get the A/C cold enough with some of that hot air blending in. Ford must have liked that idea so much that they started adding it to trucks from the factory! My 2003 F250 has a little vacuum-controlled valve in the heater line under the hood.

Yeah, maybe that little vacuum operated switch is defective and that's why our A/C's don't work very well at idle.

To add a little more to my problem when I turn the dial to vent (the one left of off) on a cool day warmer air than the outside air comes out. So I turn the dial past off to the both vent and heater vent setting (the setting one right of off) and AC'd air comes out of that vent. I'd be happy with just some fresh air from outside coming through the vents but my choices are warm air from the vents or AC'd air from the vents and heater vent. Anyone else have this happen or know why this is happening?

The A/C compressor should only come one in MAX, A/C, or DEFROST positions.

Do you thing that the switch on the dash is bad which would account for the mixed up results for the different settings? Do you think the warm air on vent is a separate problem all its own since I have read a lot of people seem to be having that particular problem. I hate to go to the dealer until I have a full understanding of what might be the problem. Our dealer here just seems to throw parts at the problem until something works. Very expensive way to rule out problems!

First I think the heated vent air is a feature at least that's what Ford will say. As far as the A/C being on in other positions, mine did the same thing when new. On vent it was mostly A/C and I checked and the compessor was locked in so I know it was partially A/C. I was going ot take it back and then suddenly it started working correctly by itself never to happen again. How many miles on your truck. I think Ford programs the A/C to work all the time for a certain mileage so demo rides are more comfortable. Boy I kill myself sometimes.

Try this, disconnect your batteries for about 15 minutes and then reconnect them. This will reset your PCM and make it re-learn how to act. I would try that before taking to a dealer..
