I have an 88 f350 dually. The truck has been sitting for about 7 months. I had overhauled the motor during this time. This past weekend I had reinstalled the motor. It initially ran rough until I setted the timing. After setting the timing it ran great.
So, I drove it home (approx.15 minutes), got back into the truck started it up and she still was running fine. Stopped at the HomeDepot for about 5-10 minutes. Started the truck and drove about a block before it stalled out on me. I then noticed that the gas tank selector switch was on the front tank. Although the gage read full, I wondered if it was accurate. So, went to a gas station and put about 3 -4 gallons in the rear tank. Set the selector to the front, attempted to start engine turned over tried to catch a few times, but would not start.
Used a full can of starting fluid to get it to start still no luck. Checked the HP FUEL PUMP on the rail, could hear it engage when turning the key, but no vibration from the pump when attempting to start. A friend told me that this was a sign that the pump was bad. I replaced the relay, and I am about to replace the gas filter. The motor appears not to be getting any gas.
I need help figuring this out. I have already invested loads of money and time to get this truck running. Its becoming very frustrating. Thanks.
Check the ignition system too - if a module or pickup goes bad, then the computer doesn't sense that the engine is turning, and so it won't turn on the fuel pump. Does it run on the rear tank?
Try pulling the codes too. http://fordfuelinjection.com and click on "Getting Codes" on the left side of the screen. Check the TFI module, the pickup in the distributor, and the wire from the clutch switch to the TFI module. A Haynes manual should lead you through the checks of the TFI module and related wiring.
